All MIDI channels play same instrument

I have a song with 8 or 9 MIDI channels.  I defined a .ins file for my MIDI device (a Kurzweil 2600XS -- really) and then assigned each track a midi output instrument mapped through that .ins file.  After having done this, all channels/tracks play the same instrument, not the ones they're mapped to.  (Even if I set the K2600 to 'lock' the mapped MIDI channels to their specified programs, they still all drive the same instrument).
I don't believe it's a K2600 issue because if I don't use the K2600 .ins file, most of the track instruments are driven correctly (this is an old file from back in the Cakewalk .wrk file days, when things used to work).
I'm sure this is something simple -- trivial even.  Anybody have suggestions for things to check?
Thanks.

    Welcome to the forum.
The first thing I would check is if all the MIDI tracks are on different channels, but you say when not using the 2600XS ID the correct instrument plays. Which brings up the question, what is making the sound when not using the Kurzweil?
Secondly, ensure that the keyboard has local control off, if it has such a setting. If local control is on, MIDI data will play the sound the keyboard is set to, not what the track's patch is.

In the channel strip in Track Inspector for each midi track, I set my midi output channels there, and it never goofs up.  That parameter is right under the FX box.

Thanks.  I think I'm setting them the same way, in what MC 7 calls 'Console View'.

Seems e-mail replies don't make it to forum comments(?!), but thanks again for your response.  I haven't yet been able to crack the code.  When the "default" instrument is selected for a track, it seems to play its correct instrument on the K2600.  When the "K2600XS" instrument is assigned, it plays the common instrument (which, as I mentioned, varies I guess depending on what the last instrument successfully played actually is.)
So the thing in the middle is the .ins file I'm using.  I've pasted it here in case something in it jumps out at anybody. (The '^' characters, below, are I think carriage returns that HTML doesn't treat the same. But the format seems OK in MC since all the instrument names show up correctly in the pick-list when assigning a channel number.)

I wish I knew enough to help you with this - I am scratching my noggin. (I'll still try to work on figuring things out for you, though). :)

I can't see your picture that you posted and I don't see where you specifically addressed Gregs question about assigning each track to separate output midi channels. If all midi tracks are assigned to the same channel, it won't play separate instrument sounds, regardless of the bank and patch you have assigned for the ins file.

OK, a little update on this issue.
Based on responses to another forum question I posed (re: MIDI interface that works reliably with Win10) I purchased and installed a Roland UM One, replacing the old M-AUDIO Uno I had.  I get pretty much the same result as with the old Uno.
When I solo individual tracks, the correct instrument is played (on the K2600).  When I solo 2 tracks, they both play the same instrument (the one previously uniquely soloed).  When I solo no tracks they all play the instrument on track/channel 1.  Each of 8 tracks is mapped to a separate MIDI channel -- the one specified in the Midi file from which the song originated itself.
Anybody know anything else to try?

    hello
Can you give information how your pc and K2600xs are connected ?
    Midi in/out UM one, master/slave.
Record or play back too,or from your pc.
Is the information in chap.10 in your manual clear?
Maybe a restart from scratch ?
    succes

Hi - can you please detail the midi output channel routing assignments you made to the midi tracks? How do you have each midi track input/output routing assignments made, and where is it and how is it that you have made each midi track have the needed correct midi channel assigned, etc.

I would be quite interested in you listing all the steps you did in creating this project, so we can figure out what might be missing or a little off in being configured.

This is most likely some simple little thing - that seems to happen to me more and more these days :)

    Hi
Because  I don't know the exact configuration of your gear I suppose your Kurzweil 2600XS
is connected at your pc via either  your M audio uno or Roland UM one.  This should be done before
you start up the CW program!!!*. Now create a NEW project (NORMAL OR BLANK and give it a name.
In the control bar go to OPTIONS and click Instruments.
In the output channel (left column) you see all the available'channels of the connected ports.
If your M audio and/or your Roland UM one are properly installed they must be seen here.
The 16 midi channels are now available and on the right you'll find all the instruments,
You can connect for example all the output ports 1-16 to general midi.
It would be fine if your Kurzweil was between them, but therefore you need an installation disk or
    DEFINE it yourself.
Open now in the toolbox a new MIDI track, expand the track and in input /output you must find
your M audio or Roland, in the output you'll find the instrument (maybe general music)
In ch (click the triangle to choose a number 1-16.
    In the PATCH choose instrument
    good luck
