All my audio clips in a project have 'disappeared', but the files are in the Audio Folder.
(Also in the X1 forum http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.aspx?high=&m=2618923&mpage=1#2619007 - apologies for doubling up but there seems to be more traffic in here! Thanks already to CJ, Col and Ed for advice) I just opened up a project I was working on last night, but nearly all the clips in the audio track I was recording to have mysteriously disappeared. The only clips that remain are the last four takes I made before closing the project: My first thought was to redraw/recompute the picture cache (even though I can't find that command anywhere in X1) but there is no audio there to redraw, the affected part of the project is completely empty/silent. My second thought was that (unlikely as it would have been) I may have 'accidentally' selected this part of the track and deleted it, but all the associated audio files for the missing clips are present in the project's Audio Folder. Sadly, I had versioning switched off so I can't revert to a previous saved version of this project. My third thought was that maybe I'd somehow saved the project under a different name, but this is definitely the only version of this project I have. So, what seems to have happened is that the audio files relating to those clips have somehow become disassociated with the project. They're sitting there in the Audio Folder with all the other audio files from the project which are being correctly inserted into the project. I'd really appreciate any obvious quickfix to this to save me either having to re-record (about 50-odd clips ) or having to identify each audio clip and then import them all separately back into my project and reposition them.

so... if you punch play... you get nothing where you should have something? Is it every audio clip or just certain ones? Now comes the fun part...... since they are still there in the audio folder, they are recoverable with some effort. If it's any solace to you, I have done this very thing....deleting a clip or two...well, maybe more then a few, heck, it was a complete vocal track, from a project and then realized after the fact that I really wanted that track with all it's clips back in the project. Simply go to the audio folder and copy or drag the clips back to the track where they are supposed to be. You will need to line them up again in the proper place....that is the hardest part of restoring them in this manner. But, it is very likely your only option at this point. I can not remember if I used the drag & drop or import audio to get the clips back...... but I do recall using my audio editor to listen to them to decide what needed to come back to the project before I re-associated them into the project. Have fun.

Steve I think rather than finding out what happened first it may be a good thing to get the project back. Knowing the files are there I would move them to the project folder and save it, making sure it is being saved correctly. You may decide to copy the files to the correct project folder so they will not be moved until you determine what happened.

Just thought....I think you're working in layers.. On each track, as you need, click layers and try show or rebuild. I don't work with layers so I don't know if you'd here them.

Thanks Herb - and that's exactly what I had to do, only I used 'Import Audio' instead of dragging them. Mike, sound advice my friend, and yes, I was working in layers. As I worked through the rebuilding process, I saved the project in three versions (with associated audio). I then mixed down the final track and waited until Ed had it safely on his hard drive before I closed any of those different 'saves'. They all opened fine after I'd closed them but you can never be too careful. What annoys me most about this is that I'm a habitual, compulsive 'saver' - I hit Ctrl+S instinctively after every change I make.

Great to hear all is good! I've made the mistake of saving with two different names instead of noting versions... I don't know why I do that...and it's a rush to open a project and hours of recording is not there and always great to know it's somewhere.

Yes, it's important to remember that if a save was done and a clip/track is deleted, that clip (or series of clips for a track) are there in the sudio until you "clean" the audio folder. After that (clean) recover is impossible.
