"Allan's Resolve" (rock instrumental)
"Allan's Resolve" (rock instrumental) http://soundcloud.com/bats-brew/bb10-allans-resolve this is the last song off my newly minted album, "The Time is Magic" this was inspired by allan holdsworth, and his 'resolve' to stay true to his guns, and make his music without compromise. i knicked one lick (from an old UK song) and snuck it in there, just for pure plagairistic purposes. :) i had another studio guy in the DFW area, capture the drum performance by Brent Dacus, really talented drummer that does gig stew out there.. i had a demo sent out, and he played along with it... then they sent me the drum tracks, and i played along with those, building the track up from scratch. USACG custom strat #2 i had just built this strat, and this is the 2nd thing i recorded with it. used it for all the parts, just to see how far i could stretch tones on one instrument. all guitars thru a '81 mesa mark2b head, into a Avatar 1x12 with celestion heritage g12H-55. various mics on different parts, i had sm57's, adk hamburg, at4033, and shure ksm44... running into a A Designs Audio MP-1 mic pre, into a dbx compressor, into a soundcard, mixed in sonar.

Wow, such a fine tune!!! Great production. Another Holdsworth fan here!!!! I saw him live with I.O.U. such a great performer. Wish I had the opportunity to see U.K. when they were in town. Had to work that evening. A touch of Jeff Berlin in there as well........ Great stuff.

I'm a big fan of Allan Holdsworth's stuff, mainly from the mid to late seventies, especially when he was in "Bruford" You've definitely got some of his sounds and inflections in your playing on this and it sounded really good. This is an exceptional piece of work and that's always the case with your tracks. This sounds so professional and the mix is excellent. Liked this a lot. Well done.

I saw Batsbrew and new I would need to give it a listen. I was not disappointed. Everything sounded great. I especially liked the little whammy plunges at the end of some of the lead notes. Very cool.

radio thanks for checking this one out... bayoubill glad you dig it.... this one is mellower than most, but still has a tension to it.... bretb appreciate the listen.... well, the snare is what it is, that's the way it sounded in the room, it's a pretty natural snare sound... but i would have treated it differently if i had been the one to record it, the drums were engineered by another, and it was pretty much a one-take deal. jonbouy appreciate that, yes, not trying to pretend to play anything like AH (impossible) but definitely inspired. tap IOU, i bought that the day it came out (in the states) i really liked it, but i had been listening to holdsworth since about '76 he's got quite the discography you know..... blipp thanks for the kind words.... listened to both those bruford albums quite a bit (feels good to me, one of a kind)... those were pretty sophisticated, but i think i dug the stuff he did with the new tony williams lifetime more at the time... some of the UK stuff is REALLY good, but wetton's voice detracts for me thatsastrat thanks for listening. the whammy plunges..... yes, i was still getting acquainted with my new Hipshot Contour bridge i put a TREMSETTER in this, after i did this recording... i like it and all, it works, but i can feel the mechanism working..... not sure if i'll keep it in or not. the whammy style, i think i developed early, when i had my fender mustang, and trying to play jeff beck stuff......and that trem was so touchy. i think that's why i prefer Kahler bridges, over the floyd rose type.... the kahlers are just more responsive to me.

I like the changes and the percussion is the kind that I really like. Not the same old usual stuff, lots of non-standard things going on there. I give it a 10 because you can't dance to it. That always garners high marks in my book. Excellent fretwork as always, but even more impressives is the mix. It would at first blush sound to be a piece that might present some mixing challenges... but it is well put together. Daryl

lynn heheh, you know, playing music 24/7 for a living USED to be my day job, but i was starving, man, STARVING!!! LOL thanks for listening.... chasmcg appreciate it, thanks! daryl i'm trying to stay away from the 'non standard' as much as possible... but it's a tough place to sit on the fence, when doing that alienates half the audience! heheh, but of COURSE you can dance to this. it'd be a strange dance, but you could do it! the mix has a lot going on, that's for sure. i remixed this a dozen times, before the 'real' one finally hit me. the chimy parts, are chopsticks on champagne glasses, thru a lot of processing (delays, flanger/chorus, limiting, heavy eq and some secret stuff too) starise thanks for listening...... and hell, for what it's worth, i HAVE been playing for close to 36 years now! i oughta be getting it down by now....

Hi Batty. What a coincidence I have this cd. Really excellent track. Always a wellwritten song to go with the fantastic guitar. I love the whole cd as well. Twighlight Rain is amazing. I saw Allan at scullers jazz club years ago. It's a small room and he's just awesome to watch as he's a gangly guy somewhat like Kevin McHale was to Basketball and of course he has those foot long fingers a flyin'. Good luck with the cd and Merry Christmas.

janet thanks so much, i appreciate that rhyno heh, thanks again for the cd puchase..... i saw allan back in the mid 90's, i guess, at a very small bar in charlotte NC..... that was a great gig. twilight rain, is a true song. i had a version that was full band, but in my head, i actually hear it just like it is on the album, so i ditched the drums and went with it. thanks for listening and commenting mgh thanks for checking this one out.. yes, an unsual arrangment, it kind of follows the melody, which is the first thing i had to work with..... i cannot believe you've never listened to holdsworth. i have favorites, and others i really don't like.... but here's a good introduction right here: listen in as high a bitrate as your connection will allow http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNpt3iMFLjI http://www.youtube.com/wa...Zw&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/wa...6o&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/wa...p0&feature=related (jump to about 4:45 for his solo spot) very young holdsworth by the way, nothing i'm doing on my tune, has anything to do with Holdsworth's style of playing... it's just an inspiration. chuckc thanks chuck... this one IS done! heheh it's track 10 off my new album (see sig) bapu thanks man..... this is a combination of Palmer-captured tones, and live mic tones

scotty kansas, really? i guess my favorite kansas period is between 'song for america' and 'masques'. they were mostly more up-tempo songs, i think this is more 'nazel-gazing'. LOL thanks for the comment tho purple appreciate the listen terry.... definitely check out holdsworth, tho be prepared, his trip is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT than this is.... daryl thanks daryl. the signal chain on this is pretty simple: strat, into barber direct drive, into noise gate, into mesa boogie mark2b, into a closed back 1x12 cab, solo was a sm57 mic, all others were captured with a Palmer PDI-09 direct to mic pre, compressor and soundcard. arrangment definitely went in a different direction, but i can't claim any influence from any specific source thanks for listening scoobie yep, i love the boogie too! LOL and thanks for commenting..... the ending, i had been told before, by someone else, that they heard the ending different as well... that it ended before the last solo buildup section started. but........... it doesn't! heheh it's gotta end, the way it does, cuz that's the final part of the story, at least in my head. ampfixer you know, hackett, fripp, yeah, i could see that. never learned any of their tunes in my formative years, but definitely listened. thanks john!

Bats, I really liked AH's Velvet Darkness album. It was a real showcase for his talent, but Holdsworth never liked it. I used to listen to a lot of the earlier Tony Williams Lifetime stuff and never knew he played with them. I also liked his work on enigmatic oceans w/ Jean-Luc Ponty.
