Allen and Heath ZED 24 and Sonar 8.5 make a nice couple?

Hey sirs and madams,

Been looking to pair an Allen and Heath ZED 24 mixer with SONAR 8.5 PE for recording my five piece band. I couldn't help but notice at the bottom of the page (that I linked to above) that the USB connection is version 1.1. Ultimately, the goal is to be able to record the entire band live, and then use the mixer and plugins together inside of SONAR to tweak and mix each individual track. I know that USB 1.1 is much slower than 2.0, but in your experience, would this make my goal (as stated above) unrealistic? Thanks!

I was about to start spouting how jealous I am and then I've checked the link. I use a ZED-R16 and thought you were referring to the new all singing and dancing 24 channel version that's coming out soon but the USB 1.1 reference made me suspicious......

USB1.1 is only capable of sending a stereo pair to a DAW. You most definitely need USB 2.0 or firewire to send multiple individual channels to a DAW. Of course you'll pay much more for the privilege.

As I've said I use a ZED-R16 which is firewire but can send and receive 18 channels at a time (16 individual + stereo pair). I can highly recommend that however there is an even bigger (better??) version coming out soon called the GSR24 and if you get one of those I will turn green with envy.......

a couple of things to consider:  USB 1.1 is capable of up to 9 simultaneous inputs based on bandwidth (I've done the math somewhere, but I don't feel like digging it up).

All of the USB mixers I've seen will NOT send all individual tracks to the computer/DAW via USB, they ONLY send the MAINS.  I don't see anything in the description of this unit that says it does that, nor do I see anything that says it doesn't.  you'd want to get the manual and verify if it has simultaneous inputs sent to the computer via USB or just the stereo pair mains.

As the others said above.  Stereo recording, which is doable if you can live with a stereo mix of drums and then have everyone else do overdubs.  But that is not, what I think, you want to do.

Yeah, I hear ya. Finding out it was USB 1.1 was pretty disappointing, to say the least. Maybe I'm asking for too much, but basically what I'm looking for is a (preferrably firewire) mixer that's able to record the whole band live and dump each track to the computer for under $1200 if possible. Anybody know of anything like that?

The ZED-R16 will most definitely do that. Don't know what price it is in $$ though. If Cakewalk do the exchange rate and use the same method as they do when calculating Sonar for us UK users though you should get one for about $3.50........

Echo 12, or a stacked combo of their FW units.  The 12 is about $600.

The TC Konneck 48 for -$1000 and some extra preamps (12 in but only 4 preamps, tho they are nice).  I got mine when they were $800 and suffering from intitial bad drivers.  The drivers are fixed - I tested the lastest ones tonight and was mixing at 2.9 ms.  Great bang for buck.

PreSonus has a 20 input unit or you can stack the old FirePods.

    SAffire 56 will work.

Lynx with a ADAT card, then add a $200 behringer ADAT preamp/convertor.

I think tascam or someone has a 16 in but only 2 out "board" style interface. Check old issues of SOS.  I think it was Sam Inglis who said it worked well for the application you are describing.  It was dirt cheap - sub $500.

I don't know if the A&H 16 is that cheap but I've only heard good things about it - see FBB above.
