Along For The Ride
This is my latest opus, recorded just before Christmas and the crash of my computer. I kind of lost my train of thought with this, so I put it up for others to help steer me in the right direction. I thank you for your time and help. It can be found here: http://www.soundclick.com...&q=hi&newref=1

I really like the concept of this song. It reminds me of an old saying my professor had: having arrived is having no place left to go.

Great stuff Lynn - the lyrics are particularly brilliant. Backing vocals excellent. Love the little arpeggio that comes in at 2.52. 'But I'm enjoying the view when riding with you' - great On my second listen now. Really VERY good

I like this track Lynn, mix is nice and clear and the vocals have been recorded really nice. This next bit is just my own personal preference but I found it hard on my ears having the guitar panned to the left when listening on headphones.

Lynn, Excellent tune...I like this one a lot. Very cool intro. I love the simplicity, yet how captivating it is; it really draws me in quickly and sets the mood. Vocals are excellent, along with your choice of FX. Lyrically, one of your finest, in my opinion. What is the "boing" noise that leads into the different parts of the arrangement....very cool. Very "Beatle-like". I love it. This is just me, but I was dying to hear a Gilmourish lead to climax the song; followed by falling back into that cool groove to carry things out to the end. Mix sounds very good in my monitors.

I like the sound of your mix, Lynn. That is what hit me first. Then I listened to lyrics and instruments. Overall great sound. Although, I did lie life on the run for a long time. I'll take this. Well done, buddy!

David, thank you for your kind words and time. Daryl, your words mean a great deal to me. That is how I feel about your stuff, too. Wookie, when it passes by your furry ears I know I'm on to something. Adrian, I really appreciate your time and comments. I wondered if that might be noticed, so I pulled that panning back from 100% to 80%. On speakers, it's a different story. Michael, thank you for you kind words. I guess you're hearing the E-Bow, which I just acquired before Christmas. This is something I'll be using more because it's so fun to play. I thought about putting a lead at the end, but chose to highlight the vocals. Warren, it's good to hear from you. Thanks for your time!

Vocals really work, all the way through the song. I like your voice. The song begins on a drum transient? A sharp click is the first thing out of the speakers - I dunno, is that too abrupt? BG vocals are superior! I'd also bring the acoustic guit panned left out to the center a bit more. And your strings on the right could maybe use more reverb, they are poking out a little. The congas/bongos are subtle but they really frame things well. Sorry about your computer crap-out! Hope you are back . . . cheers, -Tom

Hey Lynn - this is a great tune! Loved it! my biggest crit, tho, is that the limiter you have on the output is slammed pretty hard and kind of distorts things. production, performances and the rest of the mix is great, tho!

Excellent number my friend. The lyrics are wonderful, your vocal phrasing really works, and the music complements them both. I love your use of instrument fills to accent the mood of the lyrics and melody. Brilliant work all the way around!!!!

Tom, thanks for the listen and kind words. I'm not sure about the transient, I'm not hearing it here. I do agree that the acoustic and strings could be panned more toward the center. I'm kinda old school where I like things panned wide because I remember when almost nothing was stereo ;) Reece, thanks for stopping by, it's good to hear from you. I'm not sure about the limiter. I don't hear the distortion on my end. I used Crowded House for an A/B reference and tried to match their volume level for the master. They usually have a lot of breathing room, which is what I was going for. Nevertheless, if others hear the distortion, that's an easy fix. Freddy, sometimes I just think we get each other. Thanks for your time and comments, as always.

I really liked this one, Lynn. It's got a great country-rock arrangement and feel that works so well, and the vocals ride nicely over top. I also liked how the one guitar part gives it that steel guitar vibe.

This production starts with a really good song. Melody and lyrics are really nice. The mix is really great as well. I love the sound of the lead vocal. The highs are very smooth and not piercing and peaky like some vocals recorded with condensers. Was it a dynamic or ribbon mic? I hear some Moody Blues. It could stand a bit brighter snare and maybe a tad more review in places. Some timing is a little rough in the first half. Like a little gentle quantizing would help a bit. I really enjoyed this.

Jimmy, thanks for listening and taking the time to comment. The vocal was an AKG Perception 220, a condenser. I am going through everything Platinum has to offer as far as warming the sound up. I'll listen to this song with a brighter snare on the next pass. Not sure about the timing, though. It's the acoustic guitar or bass, possibly, as all the MIDI stuff is quantized. It's an ongoing struggle

Hi Lynn, Talk about the music being perfect for the lyrics and vice versa! When I started listening, for some reason, I was just absorbed in the music, not taking in the lyric, and thought, "This music would be perfect for a modern cowboy, riding his horse, singing about his life. It's the perfect tempo, structure, sound and texture for that." Then I heard the lyric, "Just along for the ride." D'uh! So I went back to the beginning and listened with both ears that time. Very, very enjoyable song. Thank you, Lynn! LJ

Terrific songwriting, excellent vox, solid lyrics, good guitar. Flawless production. Love the lead guitar, reminds me of Sarah MacLachlan's guitarist, subtly understated. That last "ride" with reverb. Well done. The Devil's in my House: I wish I'd done that one. Great stuff.

Great song. I too am always distracted by hard panning for some reason. For me my brain gets pulled left or right and I stop listening to the middle> I would feature that acoustic a lot more that's some good picking in there and it possibly the only real instrument? I don't know if you play electric, but that would be awesome to replace the cheesy strings with a sustained guitar part instead.. Or use a Polysynth, I just can't take strings I guess after they were abused in 1,000,000 songs :}

Mark, thanks for listening to all three songs. That made my day. Johnny, thanks for your time and words. The EBow, and bass guitar join the acoustic as real life, stringed instruments. I know what you mean by hard panning, though this is not all that hard (75% left and right). I do like separation and feel that too many modern productions are leaning toward monophonic, perhaps because so many people listen on headphones or earbuds. And, as far as the cheesy strings - I consider them to be the icing on the cake, meaning, I often don't make hard decisions on that aspect until I get the cake batter just right. This is the kind of idea that I love to hear. I will try some different sounds when I get to that stage, so thanks again for your input.
