Altering instrument sounds in MIDI files
One of the things I'm doing quite a lot of now with MC5 is manipulating existing MIDI files a little to create backing tracks. I load the MIDI files then add Cakewalk TTS-1 as an instrument track, but I'm having probelms if I want to change the instument sound of an individual track. Whilst the track is playing I can alter the characteristics of an intrument sound or even change the instrument completely but as soon as I stop the playing the track and replay it my changes disappear. Is there something I need to do to these MIDI files to allow me to do this or is there another method of tweaking the instruments?

change the patch on the MIDI track properties instead of on the face of the GUI of TTS-1.

Still struggling with this. I've tried altering the patch from the Tracks>Property menu and also from the Input/Output section to the left hand side of the track. Although the track will indicate the instrument sound has been changed, the sound hasn't or the TTS-1 output I assign changes to the instrument that I have tried to replace.

Go to my web site and look at the MC music page. I have there, a detailed explanation on how to set TTS up to play several different instruments at the same time. You need to pay attention to the channels assigned to the instrument tracks. Each one MUST be on a different channel (MIDI channel) so that it's data is distinct from the others.

Ensure that each MIDI track is using a different channel.

paulpud Still struggling with this. ... the TTS-1 output I assign changes to the instrument that I have tried to replace. Paul, are you using MIDI files that you have downloaded? Often, these have embedded data that determines the instrument to be played for a given track. If you rewind to the beginning, this data will override any selections you have made. It would appear that is what you are seeing. Open the Event List in MC. You should see this data at the top of the list. Delete it, and your own settings should stick. Settings in the file itself take precedence over everything. Settings in the track view will follow the project. Settings in the GUI are generally temporary(at least with TTS-1). This only applies to GM/GM2 synths, such as TTS-1. Non-GM synths (Proteus, DimPro, Sample Tank, etc) do not respond to GM commands. hth.

I would suggest that you also learn and use the Cakewalk Sound Center synth. It has such better quality sounds since they are samples, not patches. You will need to use one instance per track since it is not capable of multiple channels. I love this synth.

Brilliant! It was indeed the event data on downloaded MIDI files that was causing all the trouble. I suspected there might be something I needed to alter but hadn't a clue what to look for or where to look for it. Thanks Robert. I will indeed try the Cakewalk Sound Center synth. I've tinkered with it before but never thought of applying it to the MIDI files I have. Thanks again for all the help guys, much appreciated.

Paul, This link>>> http://composersforum.nin...ce=profiles_memberList will take you to a page where I have a few tunes not kept on my other sites. Listen to Takagami & Lotus Petals. Both were composed in midi and I used Cakewalk sound center instruments to play the midi back.
