Always something...

to learn.

I finished getting the coils for the mini-humbers wired and now the cover has to
be soldered on two sides to the base.
It's going to take more iron than I have and I don't have a clue...and ya know there
is more to it than just heat/wattage.

I can see me overheating the coil, turning the cover colors...buying the wrong iron..etc.

I'm guessing a 60 watt and wrapping the cover with teflon tape.

Thought I'd ask for advice and tips before jumping in blind.

Side note....I was advised not to try mini-humbuckers. I think the reason is because
it sure is a trip dealing with the smallness of everything. If I don't mess up the the cover
I'll be halfway there. (and if I don't cook them to long potting...they are little.)

I've always trusted the solder to melt at a lower temperature than would disturb the plating... but I've never worked on something smaller than regular size.

60 watts sound ok. I plan on buying a small variable power solder station soon and hope to learn more about using just the right temperature.

Not sure if you're looking for a standard pencil iron Michael . A friend of mine bought some of these in bulk and I got one from him a few years back. I haven't had any luck with any other DC iron, but this one has given me some serious good service

    Thanks guys.

Grant my biggest problem was not knowing what I was looking for...but got lucky.

I dug out an old iron- the one that looks like a ray gun- and then I took a file to the
inside edge of the cover on both sides and with a bit of resin the solder stuck.
I put the insides in and it soldered right together.

I also wrapped it with teflon tape. Not sure if it made a difference but the outside
chrome is fine and the readings are good - no damage done!

I'll be potting my first set of mini-humbuckers tomorrow! Yeah...ya I'm excited about that.
