Amazing Grace slide

Ok I have been debating about posting a song here. Most people here are very talented as musicians and recording artist. I don't play keyboards I only play Guitar, Bass, and Drums. My main instrument is acoustic guitar. My solo acoustic guitar tracks are only one single track with no overdubs.

So Here is one lowly acoustic guitar track. It is just one track and a punch in point after the slide work. Just a solo acoustic finger picking version of Amazing grace. recorded using X1 for a movie.

About 10 ~ 15 during the course of the year, I say to myself that I'm going to record an instrumental of this and post, and I never do. It's one of my favorite songs.

The only thing I picked up on was the scraping of the slide ... I've done some slide work in a few songs and it's hard to avoid capturing that scraping sound. I was reading that glass slides help with that problem but I don't know how well.

Sounds great, I don't hear any mix/mastering problems.

Notnat Thanks for taking the time to listen. Ry cooder is one of my favs too

Bub Thanks for your input. The guitar I was using to record has very low action which makes it hard to do something about the noise of the slide. I did this on purpose to capture some of the noise as an effect. I have another guitar that has higher action and I can control the noise much better. but it does not sound as good as the guitar in the recording.

your right about controlling the noise from the slide. Sometimes it can be a hassle.

Bob Thanks for listening and thank you for the comment.

Guitarpima Thank you for checking out the song.

I really appreciate the support of this forum and all the great people who take the time to help and give their input

Marcus, wow how refreshing this was to hear!    You can play better on one track than I can using 20!   Very well done and a rare experience for me to hear.  I learned to write tunes using an Ovation acoustic 12-string which I still have around, but can't play anymore due to a hand injury.  This was so totally fresh and well done.  I had never heard a slide like this and the (neat) noises associated, in a very beautifully-performed classic like this one - you created a very unique and beautiful version here.  Many thanks for sharing!!

Guitarhacker Thank you for listing and taking the time to comment.

Starise I guess what I was trying to say is this is just one recorded track and there is not a whole lot of mixing skills needed when you only have one track to sit in the mix. Thank you for the comment and thanks for listening.

Lynn I have the deepest respect for your engineering skills I am humbled by your comment my friend.

Daryl Thanks for commenting and thanks for listening. more is on the way

JPS wow all the way from Norway. Great to hear from someone halfway around the world. Thank you

JD I am really sorry to hear about your hand. The song was arranged using an open tuning. The guitar was tuned D,A,D,F#, A, D, basically a d chord. This allows me to rely on open strings and it makes the song sound harder to play than it really is. Thank you for your kind words. all the best to you my friend.

And don't apologize for one track...we don't have to have 20 in every piece. :)

Janet Thanks for listening. I recorded this for a movie being filmed on location right now. This makes the forth movie that my music has appeared in. From what I am told they wanted it for a funeral scene then a cutaway to something else Hmmmm.

I have about 21 hymn arrangements. The arrangement I originally had was a little busy for what they were looking for so I had to simplify it and cut some stuff out. This is not a major film. It is an independent filmmaker. These films wind up at film festivals like bare bones and sundance and they work their way across the country.

That's some pretty tasty stuff, Marcus.
You're quite right, low action and a slide makes for a challenge.
But you've captured a really earthy sound here, and I love your tone.
The second part feels really right for this time of year. Leaves crunching under my boots, and plaid flannel shirts.

You should consider looking at/playing a squareneck dobro :-) I have one and love it! You don't get fret noise? Because you're like "miles" above the frets? And you tune it in open turnings. I like what you did here on guitar, very nice. (psst, go to your local music store, and check out a square neck dobro, you don't have to buy one? But check it out :-) Trust me...

The Band19 I love square neck Dobros. my only problem is getting it into the house without my wife finding out about it I do have a variax by line 6 and it has a great Dobro sound. I thought about using it. but I wanted the same tone on the finger picking part that is on the slide part. That means one guitar. I don't think the part without the slide would sound as good. I really love dobros. I already have 13 guitars and if I get another my wife will shoot me. (yeah I know I don't understand it either)

Beagle thanks for taking the time to listen and thanks for the comment.

Rikkie Yes open D. One of my favorite tunings. I also like to lower the F# to F and play in D minor. another great tuning! from time to time I will take the high E string which is tuned to D and lower it a half step to introduce a 7th (major or minor 7th depending on the F) it is also grate to take the D string (4th string)down a whole step to get a dominant 7th chord. that is great for slide as well.

    thanks for listening and commenting

Mike thanks for taking the time to listen.

VoxBox Thanks for commenting and listening

Janet Well my music has been in independent films. The key here is networking and meeting the subculture of the independent film industry. basically look at web sites like Sundance festivals and Bare bones festivals and look at the directors submitting films. Then contact directors and producers and offer your services.

Your name will appear in the credits and as these films make their way across the country other directors see your name and they may contact you as well. At least that was the case with me. It really happened by accident

The advantage is traffic. If you have a website you get traffic from the subculture of the independent film industry. My songs and website are listed in the credits. That's part of the condition. Here are some links to get you started.

    http://www.filmfestivals.com/channel/film/independent

    http://www.barebonesfilmfestivals.org/

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bare_Bones_International_Film_Festival

    http://www.sundance.org/press-center/release/2012-sundance-film-festival-awards/

I should tell you that it takes some work to get your music in but it is kind of cool to have your music in a movie or write for one.

I feel your pain... For your sake, I hope you can keep her happy. 13 guitars? :-) "Impressive..."

That's pretty sweet! I have less? But I would argue that mine are probably nicer ;-) I think Frank has us all beat. But I'll put my collection up against anybody :-)
