There's no difference between a good quality RCA jack/cable and a 1/4 " system. Both can use the same cable and I would think the contact is equally as connected. Only concern is that RCA is unbalanced as are most 1/4" jacks. In a studio with short cable runs this will not cause a problem. You want to use balanced cables when going longer distances , my limit is 6 feet. Most of my cables are only 3' in the studio. And I use a few RCA connections, they are made from Switchcraft ends and Beldon cable. I use them for CD/Tape players as well as the SPDIF connections. I have a few 1/4" to RCA cables that are very handy.
The Tape Input/ output on most mixers seem to still be RCA. I guess this is for Consumer CD, DAT and Tape decks. Studio Mastering tape machines had XLR.
OK I see what you mean by ALt out. The A&H has a send that looks like it can patch the AUX 1 or 2 returns? It looks like it's designed to be used for a Live recording alt mix. In other words you can use the Aux 1 and 2 and send it to that RCA output. Can't read the print as the picture is fuzzy.
