It sounds very good.  Faithful to the original, yet more complex guitar parts.  You did a good job of getting that without distracting melody.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot--hey, who the hell are you guys?

Thanks. I didn't comp/edit the vocal, it's just one take, so there's "a few off notes." I was just trying to put a vocal down to build the mix around. I'll redo it when the mix is balanced. Do the vocal effects sound appropriate? Does the vocal sit right? It sounds a little loud to me when it first starts.

I hear what you're saying about loud at the beginning.  I think if you bring that down a touch and the vocal the same amount you should be good.  Nothing about the effects jump out at me.  Maybe someone with more experience and expertise can offer better advice.

Hey Jack (that's your name, right?) lol

Awesome rhythm guitar tone man!  I think you've nailed all the parts to this song perfectly!  My main comment would be to go back and spend a little more time with the faders.  The main rhythm guitar seems to dominate the mix to me.  I don't hear enough bass.  How do you start your mixdown?  I think on this tune I would start with the drums, then bring in the bass.  Then it might be a tossup as to whether I'd bring in vocals or guitars...I'm thinking guitars, then get the vocals to sit well. Then go back and maybe "ride the faders" to get the interplay between vocals and guitars sweet.  Notice the lead line at the beginning is burried under the rhythm guitar.
Curious about your guitar/amp/mic setup...care to share?
    Thanks.

    Cheers!

Sorry for the confusion guys. Guitarhacker had it right... removed for fixing. PS. I did not track the instruments, they are stems that i DL'd and mixed. I then overdubbed the lead vocal. Will repost the next mix. Thanks again, Matt

I'm finding out that as the mix changes, the delivery of the vocal sometimes requires changing to suit. So i retracked the vocal a few times today. I can see how one can chase his tail doing this...

Hello, I posted the "fixed" mix up in the first post. Any pointers always appreciated. Thanks Tbosco, i tried to balance the guitar tracks (4 of them) with the bass, piano and organ. Tough to leave elbow room for everything and fit a vocal. The real Tom Petty mix is not as busy, i don't think.

This was worth the wait.  Your vocal was quite good, in fact, I would have liked to heard it a little louder.  Otherwise, it all sounded good.  Tom Petty would have like this.

    nice effort!
interesting, hearing about putting mixes together across the interwebs, it's cool, i've done it quite a bit with some past projects...
it's funny, you sink your teeth into it, no matter what, and to borrow another tom petty title 'damn the torpedoes', you find a way to bring all together.
    nice mix.

Thanks daryl. Back wen i first made the account, i just arbitrarily put jack klugman in as my user name. Now i changed the UN to 'no days back' but jack klugman still remains in the links. Soundcloud support just got back to me today about how to change that, but i think it will void all the existing links (like this one). ------------- Thanks batsbrew, yeah, you really have to work with what you've got, and try to make all of the overdubs sound appropriate. Sometimes, you feel handcuffed by the tone of the tracks. Make the best of it, it's just practice, but it's very good practice for cover material and learning what mixing is.

Went back again and listened for those items specifically;   but no - I don't hear anything distracting in FX or in any piano parts.  In fact at around 2:24 as piano comes in I'd be happy to hear it a little louder overtop the rhythms.  But overall the mix sounds very well balanced to me, and I'm just on ear pods and a notebook here at work.      Very nice, in my opinion.   - John
