American Girl (Tom Petty Cover featuring Bacco on vocals)

Cover of Tom Petty's American Girl from Tom Petty and the Heartbreaker's 1977 debut album.   This song features Bacco on lead vocals.   We started this song about 2-3 weeks before Petty's death so this has been in the works for awhile.  In additional to lead and backing vocals, Bacco did all the guitars in the right channel.   I did the left channel guitars, bass, keyboards and drums..

Comments welcome.

Listening to the vocals on this, I never really appreciated how difficult this song is to sing. I think you guys pulled it off very well!

Thanks!! Going in I thought the vocals would be 'easy' but Tom Petty put a lot into his performances beyond just melody that proved to be hard to emulate. His tone and pitch placement including inflections are quite unique and while I'm not trying to copy him I still enjoy putting in a little nod here and there :D  Thanks again for the listen and feedback!

Mark -  Thx very much for the listen and comment.

Dan - Appreciate the comment.   I agree, TP had a unique vocal style and made it look easier than I think it really was.   Bacco did a nice job integrating some Petty'isms without becoming a caricature.    Also, this was a deceptively difficult song to mix.   I could have probably spent some more time on it:) Thx.

Arlen - Thank you.  Appreciate it.

I think the guitars has the right amount of volume to keep the momentum going.

Wow, sounds just like the original.  Very authentic.  I played this while my wife was sitting around and she just started singing along like anything else on the radio.  She had no idea.  Love Tom Petty, and you did real good right here.

Michael -  Thanks for the listen appreciate it.

Wookie - Appreciate it, very glad you found it "furry claw tapping stuff"   The drums were actually pretty challenging to make them sound realistic.  That beat can go mechanical very easily.

Daryl - Thanks very much.   This was a challenging mix overall so happy to hear the energy came through.

Mississippi - Thanks for the comment.    Will have to look at the guitars, they are pretty loud on the original song as well so I think that is what I was going for.

Ida_Mikke - Appreciate the listen and comment

Voda La Void - Glad you and the wife liked this track.   Tom Petty passed a couple weeks after we started this.  As a result, we wanted it to be a proper tribute so probably spent way more time on this than other projects.   It was also a deceptively difficult song to mix.   The playing was not too challenging but the mix was for some reason.   Of course the vocals really make the song and Bacco did a very good job on the lead and backing vocals (and guitar playing).

    Hey, Mark and Philip,

Dynamite job on this great Petty cover and staying true to the original!

Excellent work on recreating the instrumental performances, and the vocals were spectacular.  The mix and production work sounded crisp, energetic and punchy!

Another great collab, guys, super stuff, boys!

    Have a good one!

Doug - Appreciate the listen.   Sorry for the delayed responses, have been pretty swamped with work:(.

    Eph221-  Thanks, appreciate it.

Lynn - Thank you, we were going for the vintage vibe with a little bit of modern sound added for seasoning.   Also a big fan of your music.

    Makke - Appreciate the listen.

Wayfarer - Thank you, always a compliment if you are not a fan of the original artist or song.    I always know a good singer when I don't get nausious listening to Against All Odds in some of those singing competitions:)

Bob - Good to hear from you.   I think the vocals on this were really spectacular and make the track work.   The guitar parts were not super difficult but the mix was a bear:)

Great job!   There's a lot of nuance in there, both the vocals and music...   And while it's faithful to the original, no doubt, there's just enough "different" mixed in to not be the original.    If that makes any sense.

    Steve,

Thanks for the comment.    That is what we were going for so it makes perfect sense:)

Tempo mapped to the original and then started constructing the parts starting with drums and bass.  I think the mix is a little more modern, the original was all midrange with very little bottom end, i.e., added some more kick and bass than the original had.   The guitars are very similar to the original.    I really liked Bacco's approach to the vocals (both lead and backing).  Not an easy song to sing.

    Appreciate the listen.

    Regards
