American Idol, anybody watching this show? Thoughts?
Anybody watching the show American Idol? Honestly I never watch it, but I've watched it this season because there's a young girl on there from my home town that I lived in years ago but no longer do, here name is Lauren Alaina. I hope she wins it all. Anybody else watching this show? Thoughts?

But it does make one question democracy when you see some of the acts people will vote for. "Jedward" once got a large proportion of the vote here. Sorry wrong picture. (or was it?)

Only liked Finnish Idol because it's where a contestant sang Iron Maiden songs for the season and won.

Honestly, I can't stand those musical-contest shows. It offends me that it's trivializing an art form that I love, as I watch it get flushed down the commercialism toilet. That's always been happening, but now with AutoTune and other tricks, it's just getting worse. I'll never encourage the contest aspect, the commercialism, or the stars that sell themselves for the TV publicity (mr. tyler....). This is only MY opinion. I'm glad some people find pleasure in it....

I think its nice that those that will never have an oppurtunity at even hitting a stage can gain that through this show. There are millions out there that want to but will never be heard and have the talent to make it. With that said, I agree with Slug on most of it. This is a Contest but there is absolutely no definite way to the title. After the judges have wittled down the masses to a manageable no#, the rest is upto chance of where the votes fall and this is anyones guess from week to week and GREAT one have gone home because of this. Its all about the drama of the entire situation that keeps one entertained. I fined myself watching certain singers and avoiding it other weeks because of singers, I can live without the drama LOL It is nice to see some of them really make even though they didnt get the title while others have gotten the title and havent been heard from since.

I have watched it a few times...mostly cause the TV is on, I'm in the room and working on my lappy, and the girls leave the room and the TV stays on the same channel. I usually watch the recap in the last 2 minutes.... that tells me all I need to know. Steven Tyler, with his "you're not allowed to say that on national TV" commentary has made it a bit interesting at times. I think it's all a set up, staged to get the highest rating possible. "We" also, have a local dog in the fight this year. (eastern NC) Scotty McCreery is a young man from Garner NC. That is just up the road a short distance, and for those of you who know 57Gregy, who lives in Clayton NC, Garner is almost literally the town next door just a few miles closer to Raleigh. So we're kinda watching and keeping our fingers crossed for Scotty. He reminds me a lot of Randy Travis in the way he sings. there is no doubt the boy is country and regardless of what happens in the following several weeks, he will have a country music career.

I'll never encourage the contest aspect, the commercialism, or the stars that sell themselves for the TV publicity (mr. tyler....). This is only MY opinion. I'm glad some people find pleasure in it.... I can't stand the contest aspect of things myself, back in the late 80's that's the main reason I quite playing music altogether, we could never get nothing done for somebody trying to play faster or show more flash guitar licks and ego's and stuff like that. All I wanted to do was play original music and everybody else wanted to play cover tunes, the only problem is they never took the time to actually learn the entire cover tunes properly, more or less they played similar chords and winged their way through parts, very discouraging to me because I was serious about playing the music, but most everybody else I ran into at the time just wanted to jam. Most of the people who were serious that I ran into around that time were already in bands or looking to get paid to play music, it was a very discouraging time for me. At least using this cakewalk software I can add everything around the guitar without having to wait or rely on somebody else to add to the music. I'm only watching the show because I'd like to see somebody from my old hometown win. I do question the accuracy of their voting system, too many ways I can see them manipulating the vote to better market the show itself because of controversy over artist kicked off and other things "Judges Votes". Your right about that auto-tune stuff, I can't stand it. Sadly, LOL, I don't think auto tune could help my singing, but I'm not going to throw a robot voice in my music just to add vocals, I'll just keep working on my music and maybe some day somebody will be interested in singing a few things, if not I'm happy just playing music and I guess that's all that should matter.

I hate those shows with a vengeance. The staged 'auditions' where everyone has obviously already been vetted, the hysterical audience screaming at the first note sung, the 'good cop, bad cop' judges, vulnerable people with average singing voices being strung along for weeks...no thanks.

I said it before in another thread. This years contestants are nearly a lackluster bunch (unlike some stand out people from years gone by). I remember catching Taylor Hicks audition and telling my Lovely Lady that he was going to win the show. She doubted me. I also said early on that Lambert would not take 1st but would be 2nd. This year I had early on predicted that Haley would win. I more or less pulled back my opinion over the last three weeks. But her perfomance with Casey (on the last results show) showed her true capability, there is still a glimmer of hope that I'm right. I personally believe that since they do not publish vote counts it's the producers who actually make the choices based upon what will make the show "interesting".

Who gets the money? What percentage do the Contestants get in touring, recording, commercials etc, I suspect they have to sign a contract that ties them up and the money doesn't make it to the contestant/winner's bank account.

I usually watch more after the initial audition shows. I've auditioned enough vocalists for bands to understand how painful that process is to endure (for the auditioner.) I think this crop of contestants are the most evenly matched of any season. There are none that I can't wait to see eliminated. Some of them are obvious "Idol Stars" and will be little more than the season's winner and a personality for a year on local talk shows and an occasional visit on a following AI broadcast in the next few years. There are a few who look like they could be entertainers, one who could be an "artist" type and some who could end up in a touring broadway show. They'll get to do their Idol tour and have a big time in their young lives before they find out that the music biz isn't all it's cracked up to be. But at least, they got their foot in the door.

hmm, seems I'm in disagreement with most here. I love the contestant aspect. That's what makes it enteraintment, and not just listening to music (I also like "So you think you can dance"). Of course the show is made to get high ratings, it's a business. But what's wrong with creating a format, or music that people enjoy? What's wrong with making music for the masses instead of the elite clickish stuff (ahh that stuff isn't real music, people like it). IMHO, there's nothing wrong with being commerical, or actually making a living making a living off what we love doing. Plus shows like this give people a chance to break into this business. Which I think most of us know can be hard to do. I guess for me there's nothing wrong with being this type of shown anymore than there's something wrong with televising sports. Both are forms of enterainment. As for this particular season, I haven't watched that much of it (been working on my own music) but there were a number of very talented people on it. People with talent I WISH I had. anyway, my two cents

bapu I remember catching Taylor Hicks audition and telling my Lovely Lady that he was going to win the show. She doubted me. Same here. I knew the second I heard him he was going to win it. We watch the auditions to see the terrible ones and have a good laugh, but then we don't watch the rest of the show. Especially this year, I mean ... Steven Tyler ... really??? And if I hear "It's pitchy dog" one more time I'm probably gonna hurl. We record everything then cut out the commercials. The DVR always get's the last 20 ~ 30 seconds of Idol before our show starts so I've been hearing the farewell songs by the person who got voted off. So far, I can't see how any of them go past the audition stage ... sounds like a really bad year. They definitely are not using auto tune I can tell you that.
