Among The Stars (new version Feb 5, now with EVEN MORE spaciness!)
EDIT: new version posted Feb 5th, now with EVEN MORE spaciness! I seem to have gotten a lot more listens to this song since I moved it to the beginning of my album's track list on SoundCloud. It was never really what I'd considered a "finished" song, until now. I have finally given it a longer tail and fade-in/out that I'd been wanting to do but never quite got around to. So, now it's ready! I think. :) Anyway, "Among The Stars" is a spacy/floaty ambient arpeggiation that I think will be the first track on my first electronic album release later this year. https://soundcloud.com/arcanor/among-the-stars I'd appreciate knowing what y'all think about it!

What I mean is the upper register of the electric piano sound that repeats a melody over and over. I wondered if you had considered swapping it out for another, slightly different sound, or doubling it with something an octave higher...

Walt, Sound good. This would be fun to play some guitar along with, but I saw no download available. Anyway, it is spacy and floaty for sure. Kind of makes me think of when I was a kid and would lay on the front lawn and stare up at the stars. Nice sounds!!

Ah, I understand now. You're referring to the synth part (it's actually a z3ta+2, running a very slightly modified Alpha Centauri patch). I don't think of that as an electric piano part, so I didn't catch the reference. It sounds more like a string (guitar/harp) emulation to me. Anyway, I have to admit this was one of my very first electronic pieces (recorded in December 2012), so I didn't stray too far from the preset, since I was still trying to understand the basics of what z3ta+2 could do. I think all I ended up changing was setting the tempo sync to 16ths and leaving the voice of the patch alone. That being said, I have since grown attached to that sound, even if it's not maximally spacy. :) It still sounds a bit synthy, which is appropriate, given the rest of the album. When I bump the pitch up 1, 2, or 3 octaves I think it loses some of the graininess/lo-fi texture that's there now. Thanks for the idea though!

Really like the main motif. The sound you used is awesome. I love how you used a synth sound in a more "conventional" way (I mean that as a good thing). Thomas Newman is awesome for that. Just sounds like music, as opposed to electronic music. :)

Nice piece.
I agree with changing it up a bit....the same repeating lick.... vary it a bit..... add the octave up, vary the lick a bit as it moves through the song. Lengthen the notes to give a more spacy feeling.....add verb to it as well.....
I didn't get a feeling from the music that I was among the stars floating...mostly from the short duration of the notes in the lick with no verby feel...... not like I was expecting based on the title.
A little more work by editing some things and I think that basic underlying song works fine.
Yeah.... move something to the top and it will get more plays..... people only go 2 or 3 songs down in most play lists on the net. Impatient people.... needing instant gratification or they are out and looking it somewhere else....

I like it for what you mean it to be, I think...an intro. It doesn't go on long enough to have a lot to say about it really. It sounds cool, spacey, ambient, just like you said. I liked it. If this were the first song, I'd probably say "oh cool, let's light one up, this could be a cool album...". You've set the table here.

I hear what you're saying, but I think you may be focusing too much on the "high arpeggiation" sound, which is supposed to be more of a background part, while the legato strings and eerie synth sounds add the "spacy" feeling underneath. Very nice intro - the changes that are going on in the background are very subtle.
If you really want any crits/ideas then maybe use a radical filter on the main riff but fade it in verrrrry slowly with automation so the sound changes over the piece.

Very nice intro - the changes that are going on in the background are very subtle.
If you really want any crits/ideas then maybe use a radical filter on the main riff but fade it in verrrrry slowly with automation so the sound changes over the piece.

Thanks Tim. It's actually z3ta+2, and the phasing is coming from a big fat filter I just added on top of it. I could probably back off on the resonance a bit. I probably overdid it.

That was a great job on reworking the tune. The reverb and the cello make a huge difference as does the little flute thing that first hits at :38...... you successfully kept the repeating lick but now, it is a background theme and other things in the mix keep you interested and focused on what is coming next....
The best reworking of a tune I've heard in some time. Outstanding job.

Walt, this is very lovely and trippy at the same time. It allows the listener to be immersed in the song and float on top of it. As usual, very impressive!
