An Angel From Heaven Decent - Original Added - New Mix 9/30/2012 - First play with X2

ADDED 9/30/2012: I put up a new (and most likely finaly) mix of the song. Link is at the bottom of this post.

Original:
I finally got to install X2 today and thought I’d give it a thorough test drive and pulled up this old project that I resurrected recently and started mixing it pretty much from scratch. I didn't add anything today, just did the mix. I think it sounds pretty good now – some adjustments is still needed however.

The song was created by and old friend of mine sometime in 2003/2004 who took it to my place because he wanted me to do vocals, bass and whatever I could do to it. He had put down the drums (DR-008 if I’m not mistaken), left and right guitar recorded through a very nasty processor thingy, the lead and bass synth and some other bits and pieces. So I wrote the lyrics, recorded them, added some synth stabs, mixed it and we partied hard!

I took the liberty to upload the original so you can check it out here:

Anyway, my friend is getting married so a month ago I decided to re-do this song, realizing how amateurish the original sounded – even though I’ve always liked this song.

I’ve added another layer of guitars, using a high pass filter to let the original be the definition before I added my own to add some balls. The bass is the original from 2004, put through Guitar Rig 4. The melodic vocals are the original but I had to re-do the screams. I also changed the vocals on the verse completely because the original was just a terrible voice over thing I did because of the lack of fantasy. I adjusted some of the drum patterns and replaced all the drum sounds. But I layered the kick with his original kick. All strings are new. The original didn’t have any. Most of the synths are still from the original project, except the drums and some of the drones. I also added some sub kick for good measure. Then I mixed it using mostly Pro Channel stuff – including the Softube bundle. I’ve ran everything through a Master Tape plugin and the Pro-L so no serious mastering yet.

So this was started in Sonar 3 and finished in X2 – quite the journey;) I absolutely fell in love with the console emulation in X2. I though it added some greatness to the sound of the tracks I’ve added it to. Other than that I think X2 is a great step forward when it comes to work flow. Some weird behaviour here and there but I haven’t really been analyzing.

Number of crashes after 7 hours of heavy use = 0

Any comments on the mix is welcome. I've used headphones for the last couple of hours so my final desicions were probably affected by fatigue.

Oh, and I'm sorry if anyone find the lyrics blasphemous. That was never the intention - it's inspired by the comic where Wolverine and Punisher fight side by side after Punisher get's completely divine and angel-ish at some point.

Enjoy

This was good. I would make those vocals a little wetter? "Wetter is better man." Not soaking wet? But at least moist? It sounds a bit arid?

I think I remember the last version but I'm not A/Bing them. That lead singer (the screamer?) may want to gargle some salt water?

I'm going to pull the trigger on a new DAW w/X2 later this year (8.3 Pro now.) Can't wait, people seem to really like it.

Good job on this one again, but moisten those vox a bit? Don't be afraid of the verb? "go in to the light, go in to the verb..."

@TheBand19 - Thanks for your comment. Will definitely look at the reverb on the vox again. I replaced the 'verb I had there from before with Breverb as a last minute desicion just to test it. Ill play with it more - it seems promising.

@Herb - It does indeed work AFAIK I think it's a really cool upgrade. re-visiting old tracks is cool. Makes me feel old but it's cool.

@Drumstixkev - Thanks for that and I am glad you enjoyed it. Some tweaks and I think it's done. Thanks for your feedback.

@Timidi - Thanks for your comment. Great is what I strive for

This sounds very good on my monitors, and in no small part due to the arrangement.  It has highs and lows and a lot of breathing room.  You don't have far to go to get this radio ready.

Over the top production :), good stuff, love the string intro build up vox effects and as Lynn said, ready for radio pretty much.
X2 definitely works fine overall, I have got it to freeze and require a restart with some of my antics, but overall good.

James, Lynn, Tony and JamesG - Thank you so much for the kind comments. I won't take any credit for the arrangement, that's my friends creation. But of all the tracks he made and wanted me to participate on, this is by far the best;)

But thanks for the comments. I'll give it a slight overhaul tomorrow

Thanks for that Notnat! I appreciate you taking the time to listen

The X-series is a very different beast than previous Sonars. I am extremely happy with X2 so far and I really got into X1. If you choose to upgrade, I hope you'll enjoy it just as much

I've uploaded the original if anyone is interested in comparing the two versions.
    Cheers!

I like it.  I listened to a bit of the first version and it had a bigger "impact" when it started but the second one is a more well done version.  OH!!!, Never mind there's the impact, a bit farther in.  Nicxe flow and dynamics.  I guess X2 works.  I know you do!!

    Hey Warren!

Glad you like it and thanks for the kind comments. he he, yeah, the danger of posting the original vs the re-mix is that some aspects of the first version can not be re-created. Anyway, I think I managed to hold on to the impact

@Philz - Yup, no crashes. I had two yesterday. Not sure if it was my fault (most likely) or Sonars (could happen) but I'm impressed with how well it works.

        - Oh, and thanks for the compliment

@Dan - I've actually heard the Celldweller comment from others as well. But that's cool. I'm not sure the guy who wrote the song have actually ever heard them. Thanks for listening

    Hey Stuart!

Thanks for taking the time to listen and to comment. Your suggestion is noted. I will definitely look into that. I've been tinkering with some adjustments to the mix and will definitely look into bringing the strings more forward. At least give it a little bit of experimentation;) I am trying to get them more demanding on the final part as well. But the song get's so busy there that it 's actually quite challenging

Thanks for you comment and suggestion, hopefully I'll have a new mix out during the weekend or by early next week.

    Hey everyone!

I just put up a new mix. The link is in the opening post. I just did some minor tweaks to some levels on the vocals and adjusted the drums a little. Some other things to. I didn't really keep track of what I did and just went along with it.

I put it through Ozone this time so it's close to mastered now

I believe it sounds better. I hope so. I'm sending it off to my friend who wrote it.

Thanks for all the nice comments - I really appreciate you taking the time to listen to this.

Re the busy end. After i have spent hours working on getting the best sound out of Chris' playing we sit down together and have an editing session. There are parts which i think he has played so well, but he just cuts and dumps them. I would never dare, but the result is always a better more open composition which gives other parts space to breathe. Some of the most important musical parts are the ones you leave on the cutting room floor.

ProjectM,  This is cool stuff man.  Nice work.  I like the dynamics, the dark feel, how heavy this gets & proper use of screams in hard rock!  (I personally feel they are best used as accents, or for emphasis... too many bands never STOP screaming and it gets old fast.  Sounds cool hear though)  I am listening on a crap system so I won't post any mix crits, but all elements are present & that is usually a good sign for a mix.  Kudos!

Yeah, cuting out the fluff is a good idea some times. I tried to edit out some stuff at the end there that just messed up the sound and make the arrangement a little cleaner while trying to maintain the energy. I think it went pretty well. "Kill Your Darlings" is usually a good term to remember when it comes to editing out stuff. I've tried to be bold in this last version.

I just had a chat with Gunnar, the guy who wrote the song. He hasn't heard any of this little re-work project until tonight and he was thrilled! And that makes it worth it. He doesn't do much music anymore but he said he'd bring out his guitar tomorrow. That makes me happy

Hey Chuck! Thanks for listening and the comments. I'm one of those who usually bring the screams throughout the entire song - but I see what you mean and I agree. However, when done well it can be good. Sometimes I succeed, sometimes I don't. But that's music for ya This song is a hybreed weirdo song. I decided that I wouldn't put any restraints on how I did the vocals because this will probably never be played live. I think it worked really well on this track. And I fell in love with the Console Emulation for screaming vox, it really placed them in the mix.

    Thanks for the kudos
