An Ozone 5 complaint.

Why oh why, when my budget is tight, did they come up with the "advanced" version?

I can barely rationalize the $99 for the "amateur" version update/upgrade.

my thoughts too....  so I'll prolly stay with O4, which I currently use.

After all.....it works...and I have it already.

I'm undecided.  I really hate to let the introductory price get away.  but O4 works and I'm sure I could use $100 bucks on something else.

Me too Beag. Like Melodyne. Which I'm sure I would use more than O5.

When Kontakt 4 was initially released, the upgrade price was $79 and I passed on it because K4 offered few enhancements over K3. After a few months had gone by, I was kicking myself for making that decision. New libraries were coming out that I couldn't use because they required K4. Fortunately, NI made another $79 upgrade offer about a year later and I jumped on it then.

Buyer's Remorse we are all familiar with, but only in the software realm is there such a thing as Non-Buyer's Remorse - the fear of missing out on an introductory price or a group buy, or simply missing the party.

But the longer you're in this game the longer-range your perspective. You think back on previous upgrades you bought that are now obsolete. You remember all the upgrades that seemed indispensable at the time but no longer matter in the slightest because they've since been superseded by subsequent upgrades. My hard drive is littered with such past purchases that are seldom or never used.

I really don't understand how people (myself included) can be such careful and smart consumers when buying anything else but are gullible babes-in-the-woods when it comes to music software and its marketing minions.

The person listening doesn't know if it's Ozone 4 or 5 or whether Ozone was even used on the track. I don't think it'll be the difference as to whether our albums go gold or platinum.

But wen the listener (i.e. another "producer") asks how you mastered it and you say O4, (s)he'll shrug and walk away, roight?

And very soon O4 will be grandfathered in.

As will O5 and O5 Advanced, and every other piece of software you own today.

The problem is there has never been a successful business model for generating ongoing revenue from software other than artificial obsolescence. They must periodically sell you something new just to stay in business, even if the "new" product is only superficially or incrementally different from the "old" one.

To a certain extent, we can justify some purchases in the name of supporting developers and keeping them afloat. But there's a difference between showing support for a favorite company versus obediently turning out your pockets every time they demand some cash. They are businesses after all, not your teenage kids!

I have a very music business savy way of looking at whether I should upgrade any of my software based on what any other producer might think:

Screw them and the horse they rode in on.

I probably would have stayed with O4 if I already had it. O4 does a great job as it is!

The unfunny police....whats the world coming to:)

I'm  thinking out loud here.... Since I already bought the boxed version of O4,can I keep it as an alternate .dll file? Or does the new installation erase all prior versions? Maybe it would pay to temporarily offload the .dll and its serial number until after I install O5.

bitflipper has said in one of these threads about O5 that all versions of Ozone are independent of each other (like sonar) and can be run independent of each other.  you can have an instance of O3, two instances of O4 and 3 instances of O5 in each project (just as an example).

What's the CPU hit if you have multiple instance of Ozone running?
Isn't that one of the features in Advanced (can you spell "E-x-p-a-n-d-e-d" children?), being able to load single processors?

I guess I really need to get the demo loaded....

The CPU hit is substantial. Ozone isn't really practical as a track effect, although people have used it that way. That's why they came out with Alloy, to provide Ozone-like features but more suitable for tracks.

I do have projects with as many as 3 instances of Ozone, but all the heavyweight soft synths have to be frozen for that to work on my aged system.

The CPU load with the new intelligent algorithm is much higher than with the legacy modes. I'm hearing from other users that they're sticking with the old algorithms until iZotope does some optimization.
