An authentic 1950's studio

Sugar Ray's Vintage Recording Studio is patterned after Sam Phillips' Sun Studio in Memphis. It's not in Tennessee, though. It's in Essex, of all places.

Aside from modern acoustical treatments, every piece of gear is an authentic relic. More importantly, they are using authentic period techniques such as recording a full band with one microphone and accomplishing the entire mix through careful mic placement. Not just a historical curiosity, these are actually practical techniques that any home recordist could benefit from knowing.

Funny thing is, these guys aren't old enough to have actually seen such techniques in practice. They study photographs to figure it all out!

The recordings are available for download here.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Nice.

I used to tell my wife that if I won the lottery, I'd open a 70's experience type of recording studio. Not just the gear but the whole experience - no cell phone allowed, no computer anywhere, staff clothing style, genuine retro furniture etc.

Since this is Las Vegas, I could probably get away with people smoking indoor too, but I'm not sure this would be a good idea.

I would also leave the hookers and the punch bowls filled with blow out of the equation...

Yeah, smoke's no good for reel-to-reel tape recorders. You could model 1960's EMI Abbey Road and put in a canteen upstairs for blowin' doobies.

Whenever I hear someone say "there's just something about that sound that appeals to people"...I reach for my revolver.
