Had I seen the thread before Craig, I would have deleted. We hardly ever delete anything but if something is offensive for no good reason, we will definitely remove it. This is suppose to be a happy place and I really don't see the value that subject line brought to the forum.

S.L.I.P.
Hello,

I have been a forum member for many years.  I do not post a lot, but if I can help I usually will, but most times more knowledgeable members will chime in first.  I read the forum everyday and I gain so much from all of you, that nothing I can say will ever repay you.  Recently I've upgraded to X3, and when I've posted a question, I've received many helpful responses, that I'm ever so thankful for.  Mr. Anderton, when I see a post from you, I go directly for it.  You have helped me a great deal.  The reason for my post, is the removal of "offensive, "Dumb, yada, yada, Hell," post.  As I feel you had every right to pull it, I think your subsequent post explaining yourself, was not necessary, and has also garnered the same results as if you left it untouched.  I feel a man, such as yourself felt guilty being the "censor," so you felt compelled to explain yourself.  I would say that you should, as role of, 'censor," delete your follow up post on the subject.

I look forward to you video's and tutorials.  This is just one man's opinion.

George

The Subsequent post was not offensive like the original post.   If you don't want to read it please don't.  You, however, want no one to be allowed to read it to decide for themselves.  That's something quite different and IMO, is offensive in and of itself.  I, however, am happy to let others see it to form there own opinions.

I was lead to Cakewalk products by the Cakewalk newsgroup back in the day. I was around when Greg and Ted use to go at it because Ted felt he deserved a free copy of PA! Back then it was open war. I don't remember anything ever getting moderated, much less deleted. I learned quick to not read what didn't interest me.

I was also around when all the political and religious "discussions" were taking place. And it was that situation that led to what we have now. I call it "Active Moderation."

I for one am for this active moderation. Keeps the forum on subject, and on topic, making music! I do not want or desire to go back to the old way.

I didn't read the thread that the OP referred  to that prompted him to start this thread. But I have seen Craig from the beginning of my time on this and other forums, and I know he wouldn't censor anything. He's never shown that in the past.

so what has given us the right to complain when a post is removed?
personally speaking (only for myself) .... nothing does.

Re: An open letter to Mr. Anderton 2014/01/14 12:54:49 (permalink)
I have stated my position on the deletion of the thread in question. But I also have some thoughts regarding the question of moderation in general.

I like the way this forum is run. I like the freedom it offers and I like the way CW has seemly dealt with the occasional spam that use to plague us.  I don't know how they achieved the lack of spam that we now enjoy but a determined "member" can still post something that is very upsetting. Such postings offers us nothing and is meant solely to cause conflict.

I see a lot of wisdom in how CW has proceeded when not to long ago we were asking for more active moderation. Even proposing that members in good standing were given some ability to act as a police force to rid us of the spammers.

CW did not react but sought out ways to help eliminate the problem. It looks to me as if they have succeeded. I don't recall having to alert CW about a blatant spammer for some time now. What they can't do is foresee a member going out of their way to be objectionable and thoughtless.  What has happened with Mr. Anderton's presents has solved that issue.

I don't know if in the future he will always be as timely as he was this time. I wont hold him to some standard that he and no one else could meet. Yet it is very reassuring to me that he is here and can act if there is a problem.

I'm not sure how this forum could get much better. With him here and the clear wisdom CW has shown I am one happy camper with the direction the forum is taking.  We can disagree about some things but in the case under discussion there is no area of gray. There was no intent other than that of a person yelling fire in a crowded theater when no fire is present.  Chaos and disruption where the only fruits that the OP of that thread intended.

Again thank you Mr. Anderton and thank you CW.

Best
John

It's amusing to see how "politically correct" people jump immediately to defend censorship.

What's even more amusing is watching this discussion and waiting to see how long it would take for someone to bring up the "C" word. All we need now is for someone to fulfill Godwin's Law.

The Internet is filled with examples of censorship, and it is historically a serious word and meaning, a word and meaning that deserve more respect than to capriciously apply them to a frivolous discussion on a privately-owned forum which is used as advertising to promote a business' products.

And people who agree with Craig's decision aren't implicitly defending censorship - it's hyperbole and a false dichotomy to suggest such a thing.

To the OP, I think it was wise of Craig to explain what he did. If he hadn't, in place of this thread we would have a thread filled with people who would want to know "what happened to the deleted thread/why was it deleted/who deleted it/etc".

Finally, if Cakewalk would give me a better deal to upgrade from X1, all would be well in the world.

That is what got this started in the first place.

Well.... I don't know what happened, don't care what happened, don't want to know what happened. Anderton has paid his dues and is a valued asset here (and many other places). That... is all I need to know.
We are lucky to have him here.

Carry on...
