And Your Bird Can Sing - cover

Hello All!

I thought I would share this one here.   We recently have nearly finished this project using SONAR 8.5.3 Producer.

My friends Ned and Randy did the lead guitar and drums respectively.  The lead guitar was done while playing both parts simultaneously and in this case what you hear is the first take.  Drums were mic'ed with 5 mics into an RME FF800.   I played the rhythm guitar and bass.  The guitars were both through a Vox amp and mic'ed.   Vocals are done by Mimi Betinis (ex-Pezband) with a Mojave MA300 tube mic through a GA pre73 tube preamp....

Hope you enjoy it!

Boffo performance.  I'm not getting good seperation on the instruments, may  need to eq the guitars and bass a little.

The mic sounds good, I almost bought a Majave tube last month, but opted for the Miktek C7.  The mic sounds good.

I think I would play with some mix options on the master, I can't quite put my finger on it, buy maybe some of the folks here with a better ear might offer some suggestions.  Just my thoughts.

    Again, a cool pformance.

    Thank you Daryl!

    Performance trumps everything, right?  haha...!!

I'm not sure I'm hearing the separation issue you're speaking of except maybe I could pan a bit more.   The lead guitar and bass are EQ'ed quite a bit, the rhythm guitar not so much.   The drums are also EQ'ed.   I'm also using the multiband compressor on the Master.   For monitors I'm using Adam A7x's and also for cans, Denon D5000's.   Everything is well delineated with those to my ears.

Maybe you can put your finger on it and let me know when it occurs to you.

    Many thanks for the feedback!

Super.  The mix sounded good on my speakers, and the performances were spot on.  The panning issue is a matter of taste, although, I've noticed recently that many people seem to forget that we're in stereo these days.  Still, good job.

I love it!  and yes it does!   I truly enjoy playing this one and hearing it done live is really cool!

Thanks so much Lynn, Lance & CLEAN for your encouragement.  It's really appreciated.

I updated he song today and added the handclaps and a tambourine for a little bit more authenticity.   Same link applies.    http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=11362287

    Hope you still enjoy it!

Today, I went looking for the issue Daryl had spotted and I think I may have found it!   It was in the rhythm guitar panning and it is now straightened out.   It sounds much better to me now.

See if you think it is more coherent now....   Thanks in advance!

    notnat,
Thanks!  I worked hard on learning that bass part, it's a lot of movement.   I recorded it with a G-K 1001RB Mkii rig and 4x12 Neo's mic'ed with a EV Nd468 and then a parallel DI to my RME FF800.   By the way, that is a real drummer, with a real kit, mic'ed with 5 mic's in my project studio.

    radio,
Thank you for listening!  I agree I'm not done with the mix yet but I was beginning to think it was in the ballpark.... or do you think not?   What is bothering you about it?  TIA

Yeah, the bass is defiantly the one that stands out as being closest in terms of sound.
Was it a Hofner per chance?
Listening to the original I'd say your version sounded better but of course they didn't have sonar and as distinctive as their sound was, they wouldn't sound like that if they recorded those songs today.

Lennon's voice is damned hard one to beat though :)

    Hello twaddle,

No, it was my '72 Guild JSII bass.

The lead guitar used was a '64 Gretsch DuoJet with both lead guitar parts played simultaneously, one take... through a cranked Vox and mic'ed with the EV Nd468.

I did the rhythm guitar on a old ES335 through the Vox using the same mic.

Agreed on Lennon's voice!   We covered Doctor Robert and She Said, She Said also.  Check these vocals out.   They are here....

One of my favorite Beatles tracks and if I remember one of Lennon's.

It doesn't really add anything to The Beatles but great playing.  The mix could be improved a little.

    Good job

    Hi Ben,

    Thank you!

Can you give any direction to pursue re: improving the mix?

On this one, we didn't want to try to add anything musically.   We are doing that on some of their other material that lends itself to modernization though.

Actually, I remember reading that Lennon called AYBCS an 'album filler', throw away song.   haha...!!!

I like the old Beatles tunes.  Nice job on the cover of this song.   The vox sound really nice with the doubling.

I might be wrong...or maybe I'm hearing things but around 45 sec I start to hear a popping or clicking that goes on for a time.  I've heard what I thought were clicks in some of my songs and after soloing the tracks looking for the source it turns out to be instrument noise.....and then it's a matter of figuring out how to get it gone.

I love the cover.  Good job.  One of the cool things about the Beatles was their ability to write a great song and get it done in under 2:30 seconds.... this one came in at 2 min.....excellent!

I'm going to sound repetitive on this, but I think it's terrific. In fact, you do a much better job of it than my old band did back in the day. The bass was perfect, right down to the tone. A blast to listen to. If I HAD to make a suggestion, it would be that the percussion could come up a very small amount. Well done. Mark

    Herb & Mark,

Thank you so much for your positive reviews.   We tried really hard on this one to make it come alive.   When others, like yourselves enjoy it, it makes all the effort into making it, worth it!!

Herb, the 'clicks' you hear are my recorded handclaps that are exactly to the original recording, I just didn't want them to be too upfront in the mix.  Maybe I should increase their level a bit to make more obvious that they are intentional.

I think I'm going to reduce the level of the bass 1 more dB, which will make the drum kit seem more apparent.

Thanks again everyone!   and if you have anymore ideas on the mix, please let me know.

well, because Herb thought the handclaps were digital 'clicks', I brought them much more forward in the mix so there shouldn't be anymore doubt about what they are.

I also increased the level of the drums by a small amount.

As usual, thanks in advance for listening and taking the time to comment.  All feedback is welcome!

    Best!
