And so you learn.. Never accept free software from a stranger.
So a friend of mine gave me a fully legal version of Win 7 Ultimate in exchange for some favours I did him. He got the disc from a guy who buys 100s of licenses at a time for corporate and school installations. It came with a unique license etc etc. Installed it. Ran great for several months. All of a sudden "This copy of Windows is not genuine". I call the guy, who gives me the number to call the software guy. "Oh, he said - it's fully legal. As long as you don't try to do any Windows updates online it'll be fine.."... Now my Windows Security refuses to work and I get a zillion popups all the time. I am going to have to buy (which I really dont mind) my own copy, and re-install... However, does that mean I have to reinstall ALL my software AGAIN, or will Windows be nice enough just to validate the license and leave me alone? Anyone have any ideas about this? Beuller... Beullerrr...?

I even got that message on my genuine copy of XP.. I had it installed on several other machines for testing purposes - never activated them.. oh well.. I think in your case it might be worth a try to just change the serial numbers without doing a reinstallation of windows! (when you go to that system-performance score, there's also a button to change the serial number.. might help) but then who knows what microsoft is loggin, they have an eye on you either way.. :-)

Well, I took the plunge and followed the link to the MS licencing site. 200 USD later it has activated the thing properly. phew! Lesson learnt.

Yeah, if you explore the CD and you see files or folders with the word "crack" in them, well...

I even got that message on my genuine copy of XP. I have heard about this message occurring on legitimate copies of Windows 7. Don't take it too literally.

craigb Yeah, if you explore the CD and you see files or folders with the word "crack" in them, well... It's probably not a crack. It's probably a copy of Windows 7 beta, which has been going around my work as well. Technically it's not illegal, but you can't do any updates on it either. Kind of crappy of him to have traded that. :(

the version supplied by my laptop maker (one of the top 5 makers I guess.. think of motorhead's most famous song.. and add 1 letter ;-) ) also said it wasn't legit!! and updating to SP1 .was a PITA.. so I did a restore from their hard drive recovery. works now, but I much prefer a disc than their preinstall.

Fog, You should be able to create your own Recovery disc(s) from the laptop - in fact, it's advisable (If your hard drive were to suddenly die, you'd lose the OS preinstall). The recovery disc utility is usually found under Programs, "PC manufacturer's name", or under System Tools. Alternatively, you can use a backup imaging app like Acronis True Image.
