Android Apps

I don't have any DAW related software apps on my Android, but wondered what are some useful or interesting/creative apps you guys use and can recommend?

Google "Best (free) android DAW apps" or variations and there are quite a few things out there.

I have been researching this recently as well since upgrading my phone. I tried Caustic in the past, but didn't click with it, so downloaded "Walk Band" which is lauded as the counterpart to "GarageBand." Not done a lot with it yet, but it is free and has free instrument modules available. I can see capturing tracks with it, but anything editing/mixing related would be rough. On a phone, anything "DAW" gets clunky just from the tiny screen space (fat finger syndrome). This phone (LG V30) came with "HD Audio Recorder" (also free), which I have used more since most ideas can be captured vocally and that will do vocal tracks and vocal overdubbing (not tested that yet). Basically one-track, but good for capturing things on the fly (also an advantage of a phone over a tablet).

Unfortunately, the iOS market seems to have precedence on anything music-related. I have made a few purchases in the past year with free iOS support and zero support from Android... in some ways this does make sense since they are tactile apps and best suited for iPad... even on an iPhone I can see some of them being rather clunky (again, the screen space).

I can see "forced to buy an iPad" somewhere in my future

ASUS ROG Maximus X Hero (Wi-Fi AC), i7-8700k, 16GB RAM, GTX-1070Ti, Win 10 Pro, Saffire PRO 24 DSP, A-300 PRO, plus numerous gadgets and gizmos that make or manipulate sound in some way.

IK has a bunch of OK stuff for android. I searched for "music recorder" in the app store and came across n-Track Studio 8, Audio Evolution Mobile Studio and Walk Band. I'm sure there are others if I knew where to look.

This is an older link. The code has gone a long way since. Just in case you want a class compliant interface for the Android. Android Gets USB Audio

I have:

For recording:

Audio Evolution Mobile with paid USB support (my door stop PreSonus AudioBox 44VSL works great as a class compliant device...way better than it ever did on Windows)

Field Recorder (v7.1 fixed the CPU spiking problem)

For synthing around:

G-Stomper Studio

ModSynth

Saucillator for Android

For beats to practice to:

Pro Metronome (by EUMLab)

Drumgenius

Loopz

Grooves Arranger

Others:

PitchLab Pro

Chord Wheel (by Elex)

Songsterr

Producer Tools

Note that I hate apps that serve ads. If I can't purchase an ad-free version, I don't even demo an app.

TouchOSC/TouchDAW are really the only two I use.

Android still has issues with audio apps that Google is trying to hash out. Not sure how long it will take to make it up to par with Apple but until it does, I doubt we'll see many high quality apps for the platform

Stuff that's still on my phone (hope the links work as I entered them on my PC - might need to remove the &hl=en_GB if you aren't in the UK)... The only thing that's DAW like is the first one.

Audio Evolution Mobile was pretty good for an Android DAW - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.extreamsd.aemobiledemo

EasyBand - like a very cut down Band in a Box https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nw.easybanddemo&hl=en_GB

Apps for looking up Tabs:-
 - GuitarTapp Pro - Lite is here https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.by845tools.guitartapp.trial&hl=en_GB
- Ultimate tabs Pro - lite here https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ultimateguitar.tabs&hl=en_GB

- GuitarTuna - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ovelin.guitartuna&hl=en_GB

- SmartChord - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.smartchord.droid

- TouchDAW - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.humatic.tdf  You can get a Sonar template here https://www.humatic.de/htools/touchdaw/man_daw.htm#sonar

- Midi Commander - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=it.bordero.midicontroller I used this to set up a way to select presets on my Peavey AT-200 (Autotune guitar) as the in-built system was flakey.

- Amplifi remote - only of interest if you have a Line 6 Amplifi amp. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.line6.amplifi&hl=en_GB

Probably some others that I've forgotten

I think if I was going to use a tablet for music, I would probably look around for a deal on iPad.  The audio apps market is really booming for that.

I have a 10" Android, but it doesn't see a lot of use, other than for portable misc computing when my Windows laptop is too bulky.

But these are some good links to check out.  Thanks!

Yet another hope dashed!

Stand alone apps usually work great, but as for "controllers" or anything designed to connect to a PC, none have ever worked for me. Windows and Android have really missed the boat on this one.

Not directly for sound production, but for making music notes on a stave, I find Chaconne useful. It's the best scoring app I've found.

I used to have Android tablets before I got my iPad(s) and the 10" ones worked well as control surfaces using TouchDaw.

We are releasing our first Android app called Momentum very soon. https://momentum.cakewalk.com/ (It will be called Momentum Music on the Play Store)
It is the ultimate DAW companion since there is a plugin (VST2/VST3/AU/AAX) for the same that you can use in any DAW. The plugin supports bidirectional transfer to and from the DAW as well as host timeline sync.
Its the perfect app to capture ideas on the go or even when rehearsing since you can record anywhere and fly ideas back to the DAW instantaneously. There is nothing out there on Android or iOS that handle back and forth with a DAW this effortlessly.

Coupled with a good USB microphone you can get very good recordings. I use it with an iPad and the Shure MV-88 and the quality is really good. With headphones I am able to input monitor and record with pretty low latency.

As for Android stuff, I only have a Moto G Gen 3 phone but I installed Caustic, Chord Wheel, DRC, ModSynth, smartChord and TouchDAW just to try out. Can't remember the last time I used any of them to be honest... Probably because a phone screen is just too small...

That would be nice, but, whether it's your favourite piece of software or a Sky TV package, the subscription model will be here for the foreseeable future, unfortunately.

All I need is to add YAS (Yet Another Subscription) to my current list:

For me, the phone is a very handy tool to get an idea quickly down (when I'm not at the DAW), and a tool like Momentum looks very useful. However, if I had to subscribe to this when the subscription price for Sonar Artist is the same, this becomes practically useless. I would definitely consider buying it outright for a reasonable price, but to subscribe? I don't think it's happening.

I suppose some of the pro's might find good value in it.....I just can't justify subscribing it for my needs.

Momentum was released today. Please check it out at http://momentum.cakewalk.com/
Its free to download and try all flavors of the multi-platform app and the plugin.

After you try it I hope you will agree that there is nothing out there that can match the ease at which you can capture ideas on the go and then recall them instantly on any device or your favorite DAW without putzing with file sharing services and transferring files and folders back and forth. This is all managed transparently through Momentum Cloud Sync, which manages uploads and downloads in the background as you work. And yes we completely support offline use. When you are online the app automatically checks for the latest ideas on the cloud and syncs your device with no manual intervention.

The main reason this is a subscription service is because of ongoing bandwidth and server costs to run this service. Starting at $2.99 per month or $29.99 annually for unlimited ideas its a pretty good deal. I think most people would pay more for a cup of coffee!

Noel Borthwick [Cakewalk]The main reason this is a subscription service is because of ongoing bandwidth and server costs to run this service. Starting at $2.99 per month or $29.99 annually for unlimited ideas its a pretty good deal. I think most people would pay more for a cup of coffee!

Set it up to work with someone's own cloud storage account like OneDrive or Dropbox and sell it for a flat fee. That will remove any and all server costs from Cakewalk.
