Angels Have To Fly - genetically modified 1/5/14
I hope everyone had a great Christmas and are looking forward to a happy new year. At the beginning of this year I started collecting songs I've written over the last several years to make a compilation CD. I'm near the end of that project, and I thought that I'd run this song past you all. I posted it here a couple years ago, but I've made drastic changes to it, lately. It's based on a true story of a dear friend of mine who escaped an abusive relationship with her life. The lyrics are personal, and if they are hard to understand, they make perfect sense to my friend. Otherwise, I'm open to any suggestion over the mix, mastering, or performance. Thanks for all your help over this last year. It's been a blast! Genetically modified 1/5/14 The song can be found here: http://www.soundclick.com/player/single_player.cfm?songid=12633475&q=hi&newref=1

Lynn, The backing track sounds very far in the background compared to the Vox. Cool song though. Regards

Lynn, That was pretty nice. The vox is right on and the background many need some more equaling out and maybe some track panning, but I love all of the textures throughout the song and the guitars were very nice in this. You always come up with some interesting lyrics and that's what make your songs so unique for me. I liked it and the message, would be personal, but I'm sure your friends understands them completely. Very nice song. Hope your Christmas was good as well. Peace and Blessings, John

Mark, thanks for listening and replying. Changing the balance between the vox and instruments would be a quick fix if I decide to go that route. Thanks for your input. John, thanks for the kind words and taking the time to listen. I had good Christmas, and I hope you did, too. The best to you in the new year.

Hi Lynn. I'm glad that you had a good Christmas. Hey, I like this one. To me it has a 1960's psychedelic feel to it and the arrangement that you have on the instrumentation adds to that feel. I don't know why but it has an Electric Prunes feel to me. If you were attempting this kind style on this song, too much fixing up might ruin the psychedelic sound of it. A little less panning (left and right) might make it sound a bit more full but what do I know? The lyrics are cool and certainly match the style of the music and the vox sound really good. Nice one. Happy New Year.

Freddy J, I must have had too much to dream last night. I never would have thought of the EP's, but I sure played that song a lot in high school. Actually, I think I ripped off a gtr riff from Adrien Belew and King Crimson when writing this. I appreciate your time and input and hope you have a HNY! Robbie, that was the best critique you could have given me. Thanks so much for listening and a HNY to you! May you continue to be healthy and creative.

I enjoyed that very much, Lynn. I won't mask any comments on the mix, as my iPad isn't all that truthful when it comes to mixes. Happy new year!

Frank, thank you for you kind comments and suggestions. There seems to be a growing consensus about the volume levels of the vox compared to the instruments. Scotty, I'm glad you liked that! As a matter of fact, I took into account mixing for laptops, tablets, and pads this time which is way different than my traditional mixing techniques. Thanks for responding.

Agree with Frank. Mix isn't bad overall, just that the instruments are overwhelmed by the vox. Harmonies sound good to me. Something is missing in the low end, but I can't put my finger on it from the Soundclick stream. Regards, Dan

Dan, thanks for listening and responding. I agree with you, and I have remixed this song as of yesterday. Hopefully, it will be more balanced now. I cranked up the bass gtr and drum, per your suggestion. Robbie, thanks for the bump!

bump worked for me! this sounds very, very cool. It has a very Bowie-ish feel to it, very edgy. Very good bass-playing, too.

Thank you, Tom, for the bump and the kind words. I love it when someone mentions Bowie in regard to my music. He put on one of the best shows I've ever seen in KC on his 2004 tour. The edginess comes from the real life situation that I wrote about. The best to you this year.

Hi Lynn, how are you? happy new year. This is mental man!!! I have a concentration span of zero when it comes to other peoples music usually but this was so damn unexpected and interesting all the way through, I had to listen! As Frank said the drums are a little muffled under the vocal, they could cut through a little better. Well done. Cian

Very nice Lynn. Really like the lyrics, especially the chorus "Empires come and go, dreams will never die". I'd like to hear a little more bottom on the killer bass track, and maybe some effects on the lead vocal to match the instruments. BG vox sounded really good. Like Freddy said, this has a very "60s" feel to it, enjoyed it a lot. Good work!

Yep +1. Music and melodies are great, but the balance between vox and backing music not quite right. From 1.30 where the music gets louder the balance is much better, maybe automate the vox to bring levels down up to 1.30 ? Love the riffs !!!!! They stay in your head :) Listening on headphones so its hard to comment about the mix,but what I hear is that the drums could do with a little more bottom end and punch ?? Love the break at 0.59s and backing vox work nicely. Great track, just needs a bit of tweaking in the levels here or there. Have a great 2014 Lynn ! Kev

Nice, high intencity vocals with many cool guitar sounds well blended together. Inspired by Pink Floyd? I really like your vocal style, fits perfectly in this genre.

Hi Lynn, I've listened to this one about 4 times now. It's a cool quirky song which I've come to expect from you, but something's bugging me about it. I think it's a slight timing issue - here and there the bass seems to drift away from the groove, could be just me though. Have a listen at 0:52 - 0:58 for example, see if you agree. This new mix sounds much better than the first one I heard.

@ rscain - thanks for taking the time to listen and your response. More low end on the bass is a priority on the next go-round. I'm not sure about f/x on the vocals because I don't want to obscure the lyrics, but I've tried it that way, and it sounds cool. @ Kev - I appreciate your comments, and I'm going to work on those suggestions. Good ears. I now realize that I really overloaded the vocals, originally. @ Leizer - Wow, Pink Floyd? What a nice thing to say. There are so many influences in my background that I don't always know where they're coming from. Thank you. @ elix - I agree with you and everyone else about the balance between voice and instruments. I'll work on that. Greetings to my Italian friend! @ james1213 - I just double checked that stretch, and I don't hear what you're hearing. That really doesn't mean anything, though, and if others hear timing issues, I'll be most eager to fix them. Since I'll be remixing this shortly, I'll put this under the microscope. Thanks for taking the time to listen several times :)! I wish that I could buy you all a round of beer.
