Angry Girl - Help me fix this *&%?! song!

I'm getting a little worn on this and can't hear the things that need fixing on this. You guys were incredibly helpful on Shot in the Back, so I'm going back to the well again, tin cup in hand asking humbly for a little help. It's very much appreciated!

First, you should at least try to tell us why you think there is a problem.

From what I hear, everything is fine except the vocals. And the claps. The vocals are hard to hear clearly because of some effect on them. And the lead vocal is a little too crispy. Then the BGV are right on top of the lead vocal as well. Pan the BGV left and right, bring the lead more up front.

The claps just sound weird. Try a better sample. Maybe pan them to the left with a very small delay panned right. Or vice versa, lol.

    Cool song though!

    Regards,
    Dan

Fun song. I think the vocals need a budge upward in the mix, as do the guitar solos. Maybe a little nudge of hi's on the snare, and drop it down a db or 2. Other than that, pretty good mix and really well performed.

Thanks so much for the kind words, Dan. I guess as the writer and performer of the song it's hard to separate what I wanted when I set out to write it from what it ends up being and I'm dealing with a little cognitive dissonance as a result. lol

I agree about the crispiness of the lead vocal and I'll try the separation idea. The handclaps do sound weird, but they aren't samples, it's actually me clapping. Maybe I should have used samples but it never occurred to me to look for some. Do you know where I can get them?

    Thanks!

I appreciate the compliments and I especially appreciate you taking the time to listen and comment, Randy, so thanks for that. I'm going to give all of these ideas a try. With this song getting the guitars right has been a major headache and the solos especially so. I'll give 'em a tweak and see what happens, thanks!

Actually I like the hand clapping. Brighten it up put some reverb on it. Make it snap. Sorry I think it belongs there. But what do I know. Great guitar playing. I like that song.
PS You definitely need to bring up the vocals a little.

Schafe, thanks for the feedback, it means a lot to me! Yeah, I'm bringing the vocals up and adding some verb to the hand claps. I like it too. :) Come to think of it, Dan's comment was not that handclaps shouldn't be there but that the sound was kind of weird.

I think it's better. The Claps do sound better, but I think the problem with them is that they sound like the upper frequencies were EQ'd out of them, making them sound too mid-rangey (is that even a word? Lol). Make them a bit brighter and they will sound more like claps instead of blocks.

Lead vocal sounds much better. There is some sibilance in spots, but it isn't as obvious as it was.

I like the song and the mix sounds good hear. However, I agree with Dan on the hand claps. Take some lower middle out of them and take them down 1dB.
    Good stuff though mate.

I listened to the second mix only. You are done. Great song, great mix!

The chorus vocals towards the end sounded a little warbly? wow and fluttery? I assume this is an intended effect . . . but if not, it's like the last minute of the song.

Or my internet connection is providing the flutter?

super cool, you have excellent separation all the way through.

Thanks for chiming in, Tom! I had to redo almost all the vocals because of an unfortunate bounce that applied a bunch of icky effects in ways that confused the hell out of me to the point that it was easier to start over with them. I guess I missed some.

Thanks for sniffing those out, I guess I ain't done after all!

    Kevin,

Real good & punchy pop-rock number. Good terse songwriting, MarshalCrenshawesque. Great instramental parts and guitar break.

My only crits (I'm listening on medium-fi mono) are that the snare is too sharp/loud most of the way with the lead vocal relatively subdued (compressed?). This could be a matter of personal taste.

    Nonetheless, real good stuff.

    Cheers,

Bert, thanks for that. I've not tried to listen in mono, I'll have to give that a listen to see what's up with that. It's funny, I juiced the high end on the snare and dropped it a few db's, so it may be that I need to drop the high end a bit on the snare. Thank you for your kind words on the tune itself and for taking the time to check it out!

Just had a listen to v2...   overall, sounds good!  Catchy tune and everything is well played.   The guitars are a standout for me for the nicely layered tones and parts.

For those hand claps, I would try layering some samples just for a bit more width/presence.

I'd listened to the second version, and liked it! The Bass/guitar sounds are awesome, the Beach boys/Steely Dan choir sounds great and fills out really nice. I'm no hand clapping expert, so I don't say anything about that. ;) Good job and thanks for sharing.

    Kevin,

If you have A version of Komplete, I think there is a small set of claps in the default Kontakt library. They are classified under "Urban", or something like that. Otherwise, there are a few Kontakt libraries I've run across that are inexpensive with things like claps, shakers and tambourines.

    Kevin,

If you have A version of Komplete, I think there is a small set of claps in the default Kontakt library. They are classified under "Urban", or something like that. Otherwise, there are a few Kontakt libraries I've run across that are inexpensive with things like claps, shakers and tambourines.

    There is also this: http://99sounds.org/vst-plugins/

    Regards,
    Dan

Dan, thanks for the pointers, I'll definitely check the 99sounds thing out, it looks like it could be very useful. I don't have Komplete, don't know a thing about it. Looks like I have some reading to do. Thanks!

    Mesh
I only listened to V2 Kevin and this is a very catchy tune.....nicely performed......a hint of T-Rex (guitar). Mix sounded fantastic on my H-phones......keep em coming mate!!!

Mesh, thanks for checking it out, and thanks for the comments. I haven't listened to T-Rex in years and years, I'm going to have to give them a listen again soon. Thanks!
