Annoying "Clicking" when recording guitar.
Hey guys! I'm new here so bare with me :P Gotta Cakewalk Sonar X1, served we well, untill a day ago when i got Addictive drums on it, everytime i record a guitar i get this crackling sound (i was fiddling with some options to get the Plugin to work). Now, ive tried playing around with the buffer rate, and sure, the clicking increases in speed the lower i go and vice versa. Ive done a total reset of options (Delete the .ini files) and doesnt work.. So, whats up???

Computer specs? Soundcard? Clicking usually means your soundcard or computer can't keep up. You may need to check your latency and driver mode settings also.

Check your sample rate in SONAR against the sample rate of your sound card. Also check to see if you have Trigger and Freewheel set.

I have a Boss GT 8 that I use to record guitar with sometimes. I use the spdif out on the BOSS GT-8 connected to the spdif input on my MOTU interface. I will get clicking if I forget to change the sync setting in SONAR MOTU driver dialog from internal to spdif. Not sure if this may be something similar you are running into or not but thought I'd throw that out there just in case. Good Luck! Bob

Ah, well i tried running it first through the mixer and then directly from the soundcard with no success (the clicking). If anybodys wondering, the WHOLE setup is Guitar to mixer, audio directed to alt 3-4, connected with 2 cables to the 2 in's on the EMU. Funny that it started when i installed AD...

Z3pSK1 Didn't fix it.. Hmmm.. this really is weird I was sure that was the cause. I had a similar problem once. Is the clicking in project project - even without AD? If so, would you be willing to do a system restore back to a restore point prior to the AD installation in order to eliminate that possibility?

daveny5 What driver mode? ASIO or WDM? You might have hit it. I had to switch from WDM to ASIO back when S8.0 came out. Up till then WDM worked the best. Same soundcard from SONAR 1 till now. And clicks and pops were the symptom.

Have you installed X1b? Those updates seem to have fixed so many problems that IMO it's the first and most essential question after gear specs when starting problemsolving.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

Was it installing Addictive Drums or having AD on a track and playing that introduced the clicking when you record guitar? Is AD playing all of the drum beats that you input in MIDI? If not, you may need to check your MIDI buffer settings under Options. Raising this can solve a lot of problems with synths/drum synths in Sonar. Peace, Tunes

Its no the wireless and i've disballed AD (it was just a simple matter of installing AD in a seperate folder and then putting the .dll in the VST plugin folder in Sonar) But heres the problem, and i really feel ashamed of saying it but, i dont really know how to use ASIO. I Run on WDM, even though i know that ASIO is MUCH faster, BUT, i dont know how to run it!

And accomplish what really? I dont know, i find it highly uneccessary to buy a new card, when i already have one which fills its function. The thing is, i am 99.9% sure that its in Sonar, not the card (other playback is perfect, its just AUDIO playback in sonar which clicks) so.. yah xP

Was just observing. Sorry if it sounded bad, didnt mean to come across that way. Everyones suggestions above is what I would have suggested as well. Are you running the 32bit or 64 bit version on X1? I noticed you have the I3 w/4 gb. Does it also do this when you just run a new project with just guitar and no AD? Thanks

Not running any other FXs and it appears on all other previous tracks. Also, maybe worth to note that it seems to do more with the audio itself (the clicking is according to the playing so silent parts will have no clicking)... This really is weird. Btw, didnt mean either to sound like some git, noticed it later on that it sounded pretty angry.. Sorry!

Maybe try freezing your AD track. I never had any clicks and pops before I installed AD. I don't know if it's a 32 bit issue or what (I'm running 64 and AD is 32). As an aside, this only happened to me on one song which had 4 or 5 soft synths tracks. I froze them all and the problem was solved. PS The song played without clicks and pops in Sonar 8.5.

Go to Edit/Preferences/Audio/Playback & Record/Driver Mode and choose "ASIO" from the drop down list. Then you will need to go to your ASIO drivers panel to adjust the settings (number of buffers etc) at Edit/Preferences/Audio/Driver Settings and click on ASIO panel. Try a higher number of buffers at first, and then if playback is reliable and click-free you can reduce the number of buffers. Worth a try.
