Another 32bit vs. 64bit question how do you make them both work?

I've been away from Sonar X1 for a bit but now I'm back and I had installed both 32 and 64bit versions.  Several people have claimed they did that and found that they both work fine.  Others have had problems.  I'm in the problems camp.  The 32bit version works fine but the 64bit version doesn't seem to be able to load many of the plugins.  I did upgrade to X1a.

Unfortunately, I no longer remember exactly how I installed them but I seem to remember at one time there was a thread that had detailed instructions about what you need to install and in what order but now I can't find it.

I was hoping that in the months between the X1 release and now that there would be a definitive guide posted here of exactly how to get both versions working correctly on one system but I haven't found one when I searched.

Does such a document or thread exist?

BTW, I have a fairly new Win7 64bit system with a quad core i7 and 12 megs of ram so I should have no problems getting the 64bit Sonar X1 working horsepower-wise.

    I have both installed and working fine.  I don't think there is really a particular order in which you have to install them.  Make sure you organize and keep separate folders for the 32bit and 64bit versions of plugs.  If you have the 32bit and 64bit versions of a plug in the same folder I've seen members report that this can cause conflicts in 64bit Sonar.  Not sure if that's your problem but just an FYI.

    It would probably help to know a little more info about your problem like what plugins are you having trouble with?  Is it a bridging issue or native 64 bit plugs?

    I had a similar problem when I was on Sonar Producer 8.5 and installed both versions. Eventually I gave up, uninstalled the 32-bit version (it only offers a couple more features than the 32-bit one so it didn't really seem necessary to me to have both). I'm on Sonar Producer X1a now, 64-bit only.

    Sonar's 32-bit VST bridging, while capable, is not as robust as Reaper's 32-bit VST bridging in its 64-bit version. I've had no end of crashes in Sonar of some 32-bit plugins that work reliably over and over in Reaper's 64-bit version. I haven't bothered changing the Sonar options on any of the plugins that have caused crashes but I understand you can set some options in the Plug-in Properties page for any plugin that may tame those wayward beasts.

    The lesson I learned, however, about VST plugins is that it's extremely important to put them in the right place and I decided mine had to be segregated into 32-bit and 64-bit versions. Since I have a couple of other DAWS in which the 32-bit and 64-bit versions peacefully co-exist, that kind of segregation made sense. One of the other DAWS I have does not have 32-bit VST bridging in its 64-bit version.

    My VST plugins are segregated this way:

    C:\Program Files\VSTplugins\[vendor name] <== 64-bit versions
    C:\Program Files (x86)\VSTplugins\[vendor name] <== 32-bit versions

    Sonar 64-bit also has its own VSTplugins path which is C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\VSTplugins. There's another directory as well on my system for shared utilities. You can check and add your own VST paths through the menu Utilities > Cakewalk Plug-in Manager and then select the Options button below the line that reads VST Configuration near the bottom of the manager's window. One thing I don't do is have Sonar scan the plugins every time at startup (this option is set in the Edit > Preferences > File > VST Settings window). So I have to remember after I've installed a new plugin to do a scan after I've started Sonar.

    Well, the specific plugin was pentagon.  I just tried the installation again (after following some cakewalk provided steps for removing all traces of cakewalk software from my system) and after installing the first disk (64-bit version) I still could not insert pentagon into a brand new project.

    After a little research I found that the problem can be cured by running Sonar in admin mode.

    It worked for me.

    I don't really know in advance which plugs are 32 bit and which are 64 (among the built in Cakewalk plugs that is) so I assume I can trust the installer to put the plug into the proper directory tree (program files vs. program files (x86).  Is this true?

    Thanks!  I'm having another problem now with Dimension Pro but I'll start a new thread.
