Another Headphones post

I don't want to hijack the other thread as the poster is asking about GOOD headphones.

What I am looking for are suggestions for headphones that are:

CHEAP
Decent sounding
Closed and as leak free as possible
Able to get really loud
Able to withstand a nuclear blast

These are the headphones that I will hand the the hard rock band while tracking. The ones the drummer will turn up until they glow slightly. I have a box of headphones (both good ones and cheap ones) that have been destroyed by clients. I am beginning to see that eventually I will need an EVEN BIGGER box. ;)

I have 3 good pairs of headphones for more critical tasks, and for the clients I trust to not destroy them.

Before anyone makes the helpful suggestion that I should really try to get the players to NOT turn them up for the sake of my gear and more importantly their ears... Well I have tried this. They don't listen. Or they can't hear me very well... ;)

I have heard about the 'More Me' headphones, and might even be able to see some before buying them, but I thought I might try here to see if anyone else has solved this problem.

thanks
cAPS

Maybe what I end up getting. ITR is just up the road a little from me. I am tired of my headphone box. ;)

A friend of mine as the More Me's. They work as well as you might expect a $20 pair of phones...they're decently sealed, sound OK, can get loud, are pretty rugged, and are kinda uncomfortable. The replacement policy:

We guarantee them to work reliably for 6 months. If they break for any reason during that period, you'll get a free replacement, but you pay for priority shipping. If they break after six months (but within the first year), we'll replace them for $5, plus priority shipping. If they break anytime after the first year, we'll replace them for $10, plus priority shipping.

sounds great to me. Certainly worth the price of admission.

Another friend has the $20 sennheisers (the ones that come 5 for $100), they're a bit more comfortable, but not as rugged as the MoreMe's.

I was going to recommend something else, but forget about it, the MoreMe's look like a spot-on match to what you're asking for.

I'll have to remember this if I ever run into a client situation like you describe. So, thanks for the tip!

The M40s look really like they fit just about everything I want except price. Maybe I will buy one of those and a More Me and see who lasts longer. ;)

*LOL* You are seeking the "Panacea" to the "Paradox" studio engineers have been faced with for decades...Just out of curiousity...If you're tracking a hard rock band, why are you terribly concerned about "leaks"?

Beyer DT 150s would be a smart choice. They are virtually indestructible, stupid loud, and IF they do break, you can actually buy EVERYTHING as spare parts. Hell, you can just buy the spare parts, and build them yourself from scratch if you really want!
They're also closed back, virtually leak free, and have been one of the standard studio headphones for some time.

    cAPLOCKS,

I have the Sennheiser HD 202 $20 a pair from BSWUSA.com and the ATH M30 for $49.99 they both sound excellent, but for comfort, I'd have to say go with the ATH M line.

The vocalist that record here will only put those on because of the comfortable filt. The HD202 are nice, but the are uncomfortable after a while.

For a very inexpensive pair of Quality, closed back headphones, go with the ATH M30 or 4O.

    Peace

Well, you have a very good point. ;) But I have had a click leak through during a quiet passage into drum overheads. But not usually.

I should have emphasized that for this purpose I don't need headphones that sound any better than 'decent'. Vocalists get HD280s as do acoustic performers in the booths usually. But for drummers, and EG players, and people who want to listen at ear splitting volume I don't want to sacrifice the 280s.

I will wake this thread up another time after I try out the More Me headphones.

I use Superphones when tracking drums:

    http://www.gk-music.com/superphones.htm

They are Sony 7506 headphones in an isolation design.

I use high and low beeps for a click track. Cuts through the playback better at lower volumes... but it also bleeds out of the headphones easier.

My drum kit is surrounded by 13 open microphones while tracking... and the click (beep) NEVER bleeds through. Even at the end of a take where reverb tails and cymbal decay means everything... the click and playback remains between my ears... not on the take.

They sound great and work great. They're tight... but very comfortable and don't press down on the ears.

    I recommend.
