Great man, I remember going to see him in 1976 in concert, I didn't realize at the time he was blind (just a dumb kid then). Great player may he rest in everlasting peace.

R.I.P. Doc. You were a great influence on me. <--- This may be the ultimate shameless plug of all time!

I saw him in the 70's in Vancouver at the old Comador ball room. His son Meryl was just starting to join him in his shows. Wonder what happened to Meryl? he was smoking hot. But the Doc, he is one big reason I got into Bluegrass. Vanguard Records. Now those are the recordings I strive to sound like! See you on the other side Doc.

unfortunately Merle was killed in 1985 working on a tractor, your right he was hot. There is a memorial show for him that is the cream event in North Carolina.

What a shame - loved his playing and he was an inspiration to me back in the '60s. Good grief I can't believe that date can be true. ;-) Regards,

Go get yourself a copy of the Nitty Grittty Dirt Band album Will the Circle be Unbroken from 1972. Doc is all over it. It was the first colab between California country (young longhairs) and the traditional older Nashville country players and it is an incredible album. Doc had a voice as great as his flat picking. I was on the road for two days and thankfully had the CD with me (it was originally a 3LP package). I listened to most of it in honor of him and Earl Scruggs who is also all over the album. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dq-1G6Wif8s http://www.youtube.com/wa...XE&feature=related (Doc starts at 1:40) http://en.wikipedia.org/w...the_Circle_Be_Unbroken Every track on the album was recorded on the first or second take straight to two-track masters, so the takes are raw and unprocessed. Additionally, another tape ran continuously throughout the entire week-long recording session, and captured the dialog between the players. RIP Doc... a very special person IMO. You left the world a better place. J
