Another bluesy, R&B-ish tune w/horns

Hey all,
First mix on this one.
Looking for ideas or comments as I think its about done. (Meaning I'll probably re-mix it 10 more times.)
As always, produced by me and the Sonar.
Never Had It So Good

I'll be back later to critique some songs.

Thanks!

Wow... nice tune... kinda like bro James Brown got that old soul and a touch of funk.... good playing, good singing, good recording.... if this is a first mix... I won't be able to stand this if it gets tweeked 10 times better.....

Occasionally I hear a song by a fellow caker that must become part of my Ipod Cakewalkers play list.. this is in.

Did I say I like it?

This of course needs to be tweaked just for the fun of it.

Even when a mix is perfect, it still is fun to tweak it in hopes of better.

It sounds mighty good to me though

    Well done

Hey RLD - Outstanding. I can see why some of your stuff was used on TV. If this is a rough draft - holy cow, because it's great in my book. Great vocals, groove, and mix (IMHO). Of course great guitar tone and lead. The bass is great on this as well.

Sorry that I don't have any critics, except maybe you should be putting more of this type of stuff out

Yeah, this is really good. I liked everything about it. Great melody. Great arrangements.

One nit might be that the BGV could be taken to a higher level (that is, improved - mixwise).

But this is top-notch. Fantastic work.

What can I say except that this is an excellent piece of musicianship. Critique on mix? you're kidding? I don't even dare tread these waters on this. You know you're good already man! If i may ask, what are you running your guitar thru??

Superb Roger, really fine work. Love the way your mix sounds, how upfront the bass & kick are..still striving to make that work. Easy to overlook the song in all this quality too - fantastic bridge & hook.

Roger - how do you get this great sound? Is it a focus on getting the original source right, mixing learned over time, great plug-ins or all of the above?

    Blimey,

This jabs, bobs and weaves like a prize fighter.

I just got a new pair of cans which I ain't got accustomed to yet so I ain't going near the mix other than to say the vox sound so good I'm wondering why they're not just a little more prominent esp. during the harmony parts. They sound pretty much loud enough but kinda 'foggy'? given how crystalline everything else is.

Excellent song with a stunning arrangement and it's exuding all that bravado/joy expressed in the lyrics and that guitar sounds really sweet.

    Top!

Excellent tune, and the vox and guitars stand out. I liked the horns as well.

The mix sounds great on a pair of lame pc speakers at work.

Big ball o' fun there. The only thing that comes to mind is a few tweaks on the reverb levels. I'd use a little less on the rhythm tracks, less on the horns, and just a touch more on the lead vocal. Also, for this style of horn section R&B, I'd boost the bari sax a few notches.

Now I'm going to have to go back and find your other tunes!

    Thanks Larry,
I try to get the mix as close as possible, but there comes a time when I lose perspective...that's where your help comes in.
Guitar is played thru a Vox Valvetronic which is a modeler.

Superb Roger, really fine work. Love the way your mix sounds, how upfront the bass & kick are..still striving to make that work. Easy to overlook the song in all this quality too - fantastic bridge & hook.

    Hey Jon,
I don't think I do anything different then anybody else.
If I were to boil it down I guess it would be strive to let each instrument have its own space, via panning and eq.

I am glad you deciphered my archaic riddle there. Sometimes I am here but my brain isn't. Listening back to this now and I think I can honestly say... I hate you. You manage to do everything so well. You are also one of the few people I have heard actually pull off midi drums in a convincing way. Midi drums are just pure torture for me, I am never satisfied with the outcome. Your stuff gives me something to aspire to.

    Cool song.

Another great song for the record books. The whole song just sucks you right into it. Have a very live preformance sound to it and the vocals/lyrics are right on the money. Very, very nice mix to this, as well. Great piece, great job on the mix. John
