Another comping newbie--comping TRACKS (not Lanes)

I've imported a song to mix with 5 "identical" lead vocal tracks and I'm trying to comp them.  They are in 5 different TRACKS, not 5 different LANES, so the Cakewalk comping video (which I've watched half a dozen times now) isn't acting the same.  I've "grouped" the tracks and can make selections of phrases and they all get marked on all 5 grouped tracks, but then the workflow gets weird as I can't just shift-spacebar and start auditioning.  (Right?)

Should I be somehow "dragging" all 5 tracks to take lanes in a new track or am I missing something really basic with "track comping"?  I want to be able to do the up/down arrow auditioning and so far all the tracks are playing in unison no matter what I do.

    Well, okay then...

What I ended up doing was dragging the TRACKS into LANES I had set up on a new audio track--and then doing things the way the videos say, rather than try and comp using TRACKS.  That's fine.  I'll do that.  I'm getting lots of Audio Dropouts after clicking "Enter" to select a phrase to promote though.  Any suggestions?
