Either will do - really depends whether you want to save everything precautionarily (registry) or for copying user maintainable data to another location/manipulation safely (XML).

I am sorry, I guess I just don't understand. Maybe a small read-me file explaining what all the options do would be helpful.   I don't have enough background in how VSTs are stored in the registry or XMLs.  this is all greek to me

maybe you can tell us what the reg key saves vs what the xml saves and why you would use one over the other?

all you wrote is:

You can edit the saved XML file in Notepad or similar to change names and re-import all changes in one go (quicker than doing it one by one).

Im not sure what the reg contains and what the xml contains and use case for both?

Listen, you owe me and the group - NOTHING.... Im just simply asking because I just dont understand.   Like what exactly do all the options do, and the use case for the reg and xml.

The first post on this page tells you what the use cases are:

"Either will do - really depends whether you want to save everything precautionarily (registry) or for copying user maintainable data to another location/manipulation safely (XML)."

The key words are "everything" and "user maintainable" (these are the fields you can edit in the Plugin Manager).

There's a revised version uploaded which should run a bit faster, requires fewer key presses to do the export/scan/import, and gives some extra feedback when loading so it doesn't look like it's doing nothing.

I've got an experimental version up at https://www.dropbox.com/s/k2gftkz2p8qcbcj/VST%20Settings%20Manager1_1%20.zip?dl=0

Changes:
1 - No external settings file - because of some other changes (for reliability and maintainability), I've made it internal and non-user-editable.  So the "default settings tick box" is removed.

2 - Right clicking on a plug-in name in the VST menus now allows immediate editing of the VST name.

3 - Left clicking on a plug-in name launches a version of the SONAR Plug-in Manager where you can edit the VST's settings (with save writing to the registry). I *think* I have the exclusivity logic correct (eg. you can't pick stereo and mono at the same time) but I'm not 100% sure; I also know that BitBridge and JBridge options are available for 64 bit plug-ins, not just 64 bit bridged ones.

4 - The exported XML formats between this and the previous version are not backwards compatible (but they are forwards compatible); the new format is smaller (partially due to 1 and partially due to redundancy I'd noticed).

5 - An option to hide excluded VSTs from the menus (defaults to hide).

Next features to add (partially done):

- Fixing the bits of (3) mentioned above
- Adding a few more bits of info on the pop-up editor
- Comparison with the list VSTs installed the last time the utility was run (aha...it'll show newly installed plug-ins :-))

@Mudgel ..... does audacity work as linked wave editor for Sonar?

I've done some testing and v2.05 can be added successfully.
Iv'e tried with newer versions but they haven't worked. More testing to do on that end but 2.05 works perfect.

If you need some help setting it up just send me a PM with the fully path to your Audacity.exe file and I'll send you back a registry file that you just need to double click to run and that's it.

Version 1.2 (final for now) is now available at: https://www.dropbox.com/s/j6o5h6jztammexw/VST%20Settings%20Manager.zip?dl=0

Changes:
1 - Right click no longer allows in-place editing of VST name in the menus.
2 - Multiple VST edit windows can now be opened at once.
3 - Additional info shown on VST edit windows (VST ID, Pro Channel/VST, 32/64 bit, filename).
4 - Some additional menu graphics (see (4) below specifically).
5 - On quit/close, you will be prompted if you want to save current VST inventory.  Clicking Yes will save the current list in the registry (per SONAR install); next time this application is run, the current list is compared with the saved list, and new VSTs are identified with a "new plug" icon in the menu.
6 - Some performance improvements (mainly down to (1) above).

Thanks - building this makes me appreciate the complexity the Bakers have to deal with, with interactions between audio objects (like plug-ins) and the user interface to manipulate them, and getting the object model correct...mine is almost certainly sub-optimal, but just about manageable because it's quite a simple tool in comparison to SONAR!

Re: Another little utility for you 2015/05/28 13:56:12 (permalink)
I know I said this was the last release for now, but I remembered I had wanted to add one more flag (whether a VST is VST3 or not) to the plugin popup window, so have done that now:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/j6o5h6jztammexw/VST%20Settings%20Manager.zip?dl=0

1 - Status bar in VST editor pop-up shows VST/VST3/PC (Pro Channel), 32 or 64 bit, VST ID (if non-zero) and filename
2 - 64 bit options (eg. BitBridge server) now only shown when it's a 64 bit plug-in
3 - Added new option tickbox to automatically backup current VST inventory identifiers (for new VST comparison) so you don't have to click yes each time you quit the application
4 - Options tickboxes now saved on quit
5 - Some internal improvements for extensibility in the future

Re: Another little utility for you 2015/05/31 16:08:52 (permalink)
Significant update (since it's been such a miserable weekend weather-wise!):

1 - New name and new download filename
2 - New icons for VSTs
3 - A new menu listing all recognised installations under Utilities menu: currently, all the functions exposed here are Clean History (which removes and no-longer-valid files from the history and re-orders the remaining ones - solves a bug where trying to open a non-existent file from SONAR's recent menu causes a change in the time display options) and lists all recent files by version; a single click on one of these removes it from the list and re-orders the list correctly.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/9bgr74x52bpaas3/SONAR%20Utils.zip?dl=0

Note: for practical (ie. registry security becomes a pain), this utility will only ever deal with settings under HKEY CURRENT USER, so won't ever allow you to edit, say, the Tools Menu options in SONAR.

Awesome.. downloaded.

I tried to open it the other day and it wouldn't run under admin... but my PC had been running all kinds of stuff without reboot for 2 days lol, so I figured it was related to something else on my pc.

Hi, thanks for your efforts on our behalf. It's a great little app.

I don't know if it is or even if it could be a problem but there was a program called Sonar Utils a number of years ago written by Ethan Winer. It did a number of different things but the major feature was to add programs to the Sonar Utility Menu. Hence the name Sonar Utils. The author wouldn't update it to x64 and so it fell into disuse. If you like I can send you a copy.

I also forgot:

4 - Clicking on the "root" name of a VST list (eg. SONAR Cakewalk VST X64) opens a dialog showing the current VST scan paths.  At some stage, I plan to make that editable.  Just don't hold your breath :-)

You will need/want to run it under the user you run SONAR as or you won't pick up the correct VST inventories.

Re: Another little utility for you 2015/06/03 04:30:26 (permalink)
I did a very quick little update this morning (same download URL as previously):

1 - Tooltip on VST menu (eg. SONAR Cakewalk VST) now shows last scan time for that VST inventory. I'm pretty certain I've calculated it correctly from the value the VST scanner stores in the registry, but I was seeing some scans reported as being done in 415AD so I'm not 100% sure :-)
2 - VST scan paths now splits user and internal paths
3 - VST scan paths popup includes a checkbox alongside each path which is checked if the path is valid (ie. it helps detect incorrect paths)
4 - VST list and properties window shows an icon (plug with a red minus) if the dll doesn't exist - another debugging tool

Very cool ... I'll grab it real quick.

And thank you about the user account info, but it was as I suspected, just an overworked machine crying for a reboot. lol
It works good, and now I'll have to really dig in and check it out.

Thank you highly!
