Another new plug from Slate Digital...
Looks like Steven's hopping on the "tape machine" emulation bandwagon. Just announced in my latest issue of Mix is Slate Digitals new tape machine emulation featuring two proprietary machines...one from Steven and another from a prominent mastering guy. I'm sure it'll be peachy keen and released a bit too early before it's absolutely ready to go. Didn't mention a price point. First quarter 2012.

Well, i like the Magnetic II which has, like, 9 tape emulations?! And the UAD Studer emulation is supposed to be the dogs...this is a tough sector Steve has moved into!

I have the FG-X too and I like that. The VCC is overly subtle to the point of "not really being able to tell the difference"......this is just my opinion....all in all I love Slate products, I just think the VCC should have been tweaked a little more

I understand folks (like Bapsi, for instance) who at first scratch their heads a bit over the VCC...it certainly CAN BE subtle. I stress can be because when used as intended...i.e. "driven" it can provide quite remarkable results. And even more so when used on every channel and the mix busses. But don't take my dimbulbed word for it. Just mosey on over to Sound on Sound (or most other recording/mixing/mastering publications or blogs that have reviewed it) and read those reviews of the VCC and how they best used it. Then again, it may just turn out to be like the latest double blind playing and listening test that was just done to try and find out why every violinist on gawds-green-earth insists that a Strad or a Gueneri is head and shoulders above all other violins. Turns out that not only could a panel of world famous violinists not tell the Strad or Gueneri from a selection of modern instruments (either by listening or playing) when asked which violin they'd most like to keep picked a newly made one...all of them thinking it was the Strad. Tee Hee.

Tee Hee. There's another aspect of the VCC I haven't seen mentioned here on the CW forum, but I asked about it on KVR. My question was if one needed a reasonable number of tracks being mixed before the VCC came into it's own and started to make it's contribution to the mix audible. I only got one response to my query, but that was "most definitely". So, those who throw together a quicky test with just a track or two may be short-changing the VCC when they say it's effect is inaudible. I'm not making an assertion this is so ... I'm just pointing out one possibility.

Thanks David. That is some helpful information. I'm gonna have to go back and try VCC on a healty project (i.e. 80-20 tracks). Another question for those in the know. If I put it on every track but some groups of tracks are set to a bus that goes to the master buss, would I need it on that (summed) bus? Think drum tracks. Or would I only put it on the (summed) bus? On paper it seems either way is workable but probably not both?

I appreciate the replies, I will try it with all of the channels using the VCC...I guess that makes sense because you're not going to hear it unless the tracks are stacked with this......

I run all tracks with the VCC channel and all busses with the VCC mix buss. YMMV. The effect is definitely "cumulative"...AND...again, it's best when driven a little (to a lot) hot.

I can't imagine it being any more important than: 1. UAD Studer 2. Nomad Nomadic 3. any of the others

yorolpal Didn't mention a price point. And I was potentially interested until they did. Even the almighty Waves now has boatloads of plug-ins for less than $100 and they're constantly having sales. Going iLock free means that a lot of the guys like me who've always resisted will finally jump onboard with them. I guess Slate will figure it out eventually. I have Magnetic I & II, I may now consider MPX.

With VCC there were many promos, discounts & including the free iLok2 & the group buy way back I have $80.00 invested in it. I was also able to get SSD4 Plat. for $120.00 & I'm glad I did.

I'm not going to jump and buy this one immediately. I have Magnetic I & II and Kramer Master Tape. They are more than sufficient; they are fantastic. I really can't see the need for another tape emulator when there is also Studer by UAD. If I were to consider purchase, I would wait, wait, wait and then wait some more--then wait, then wait a little more for all the issues to be well fixed. Even then I would want to hear what people I trust on this forum say about it and how it compares to Kramer, Studer and Magnetic. BTW I own VCC and SSD4 EX and Platinum. I just don't see the need for a Slate Virtual Tape machine, but I love how his drum samples sound.
