[Answered] AIF vs AIFF file format?
I'm working with a large (and powerful) music library that demands files in AIF format, and specifically not AIFF. In Sonar, it appears I can export as AIFF, but not AIF format. Asking the library to be more flexible is not an option. Any advice on how best to get from Sonar project to AIF? Thanks!

AIFF is short for Audio Interchange File Format, and that format can be represented by the suffix .aiff or .aif. Its just that windows prefer 3 letter prefixes, for example: HTM, vs. *.HTML CJ

I am no expert on music file types, so take this with a grain of salt. I do know that WAVE files are made of chunks of varying types and these chunks may have different formats. The same may be true for AIFF. There is, according to the Wiki, an AIFF-C format that has lots of chunk types. Other than that, most of the times, I see aif and aiff treated identically by my other audio apps.

To expand on what CJ said, export as AIFF, then change the filename suffix to AIF. It won't affect the file characteristics. It's like a speedometer is going to give the same reading whether it's labelled Miles Per Hour or MPH.

Apple AIFF Audio Interchange File Format, co-developed by Apple Inc., is most commonly used on Apple Macintosh computer systems. The file extension is .aif. The above is from page 963 of the X3 manual. So I'm not sure what problems you are having. Sonar can export this file format.

Thanks! This is what I had hoped! I'll test it out, cross my fingers and hope for the best. It's confusing because .... the music library documentation specifically said they would accept only AIF, and not AIFF. And the Sonar export screen allows save as AIFF, but nothing about AIF. So both places sort of imply there's a difference between the 2 formats. It just doesn't make much sense ... I mean we don't have WAV and WAVV files, or MP3 and MP33 files ? But I've been in the PC game for a long time, I know that "logic need not apply".

Wav is short for wave. Waveform Audio File Format. Its also a PCM file and so is aif.

.aif is a throwback to old 8.3 filename convention
