[Answered] Question about EU pricing

So here we go again.  I've been using Sonar products for years and I always upgrade but Cakewalk must have something against Europeans (UK included), as they always charge so much more for us.  Let's look at the numbers:

I'm on the full producer package so in the US that would be $149.

convert that to UK pounds and that makes £91.74
But what are Cakewalk charging ? £119,  - £28 more. WHY?!

Convert that to Euros and that makes E109.89
But what are Cakewalk charging ? E134

They must hate Europeans, only answer I can think of.  Pure discrimination and exploitation.

I'm completely disgusted!

Time check out the alternatives

ps. I wonder if they have the courage to justify themselves or even if this post will stay here?

Very common business practice to protect against exchange rate fluctuations and keep a published price......but I do agree the buffer they have left is too big!

Yep you have to add VAT on to the figure you calculated. If you want to get the X2 producer to X3 producer as the boxed version though try Et Cetera www.etcetera.co.uk they have it for £109 plus £6 for carriage which is cheaper than CW on-line store and you get the media in a box too! Only problem is it isn't in stock yet. Maybe you'll have to wait a week or two.

@Ptheory, yes that would make sense, except I can pay in dollars too.

@Chregg, If it's VAT they should say it's VAT, I wouldn't feel so ripped off if I knew £28 was going towards propping up the Health service, I might even feel virtuous!

Runningonair,

Considdering the other comments I think the difference is not that much? Taxes have allways been high in Europe.

It's been years with other big daw's who charge way more. And this year especially you get Melodyne, a great bundle of software (wich I've never seen before in a daw) and top features all around. There are the base X3 and X3 studio as well.... To me X3 is the ultimate christmas gift.... And we allways create a song in Sonar for either Sinterklaas (dutch) or Christmas with the whole family. The fun of that alone!!

With a post count of three (all in this thread) and a "Cakewalk user for years" you immediately trigger my troll sensor.

Cakewalk is a company of individuals, not some faceless corporation so I suggest you temper the use of the word "hate". That is out of line.

There are multiple threads on the topic, indeed several after each release of Sonar, so any sort of simple search would have found you a suitable answer.

if you look at other US makers, they are in the same boat.. mackie stuff I got tax wise went thru the roof and IRC m-audio stuff went the same way.

it's not their doing, personally I blame John's avatar

they don't get the same deal as EU based companies. Adversely I think focusrite / novation prices over there are decent enough ?

if I had a £ for everytime every year for this being mentioned.. I'd have hhhm £73

if you are in the EU, then you think the US lot get a better deal ,but their setup is different state to state tax wise.

healthcare wise some of it is a tad free if you live in wales.. e.g. prescriptions... england you pay £6 unless you're a diabetic etc. nhs dentist, you pay 3 bands depending on the amount of work (and there is a "point system" so dentists  can't make mega bucks doing nhs work).. (don't get me started on health tourists, who the government should start billing their country for work, like spain etc does for UK folk)

You're lucky you don't live in Denmark because have you seen how much VAT is there? I know a few Danish people who live in this country because everything is so expensive in Denmark, they don't go out very often because of high taxes.

And that's why there are so many Danish tax exciles residing in the UK.  In fact, we're quite lucky here because a number of European countries charge high VAT bands on non-essential items & as this is classed as leisure & entertainment, in some European countries that would have 40% VAT slapped on it so it's not that bad!

I'm sorry chap but I'm also going to echo "John's" sentiment as I also think you should change the title as a number of other users have pointed out that the error is in fact your understanding of how the pricing works & such titles only serve to make the rest of us based in the UK look stupid!

Lastly, a number of other forum users have also pointed you in the direction of Et Cetera a UK based company who offer excellent value for UK users so you have a choice, buy online or buy locally with a box set with disks & get some direct UK support.

I notice Et Cetera are asking for my serial number IF I wanted to buy it..but their server isn't secure? so I'd rather not put it in.. I'll ring em up instead if I decide /  want to buy it.

that way at least a UK based company gets a bit of a cut of the money.

Re: X3 Another release, another rip off, if you live in the UK and Europe 2013/10/01 14:48:04 (permalink)
Individual states have a sales tax, which is kinda like a VAT.  Here in Dallas Texas gets theirs, as does the city, as does our local transit service.  It adds up to about 8.5 cents on sales of stuff other than grocerys, etc.  This is added onto the price, so if I walk into Guitar Center and plunk down $149 cash for the upgrade they'll want another ten dollars or so - which is not included in the advertised price.  And state governments are trying to find a way to tap into the internet business to replace taxes lost by local brick and mortar stores.  Does that make our European users happier?

The Federal US government, instead of sales, taxes an individual's income.  So if I make the medium income in the US, about $50,000 (35K pounds or so), my taxes come off the top.  As an individual businessman, before I saw anything in my bank I would pay over 6% to Social Security as an individual plus another +6% as the business owner.  Add to that another 2.2% for medicare/medicaid (health care for the old and poor).  So I see less than $43K, which is then taxed on a complex sliding scale including deductions for yourself and kids (this doesn't included any business expenses, which come out before it reaches me).  Enough kids (3) and you don't pay much.  A single swinger could be paying thousands, which brings take home pay closer to the VAT rate on $50,000.  Those kind of taxes don't show up in Cake's billing or advertising, since it has come off my income and Cake doesn't have to include them.

However, I take software off through business expenses so I guess I get the last laugh, since I'm only paying around 14% taxes on the $149, not 28%.  Bigger businesses don't even pay the 14% since they write stuff off before hitting the individual.

Although worth noting that most states do not tax the sale of food for home consumption. So I believe we could all get a better deal on Sonar if Cake were to make all discs, boxes and documentation edible.

AT
Individual states have a sales tax, which is kinda like a VAT.

I have the impression you seem to think that in Europe we don't pay taxes on our income... Here in Belgium, a little less than 48% goes to all kinds of taxes and social security... (for my paygrade anyway... it goes from somewhere around 30% to about 55%) And that is seperate from the 21% sales tax we pay.
So, if you count the tax you pay, and compare it with what we pay... you're lucky!
