[Answered] The pan knob on my busses aren't doing anything (X1) *SOLVED*
When I try to pan on a bus it just stays right in the middle. What am I missing here? Cheers.

Dunno Beep. What have you been up to? Is it a stereo bus? Not that that should matter.

Yup. Stereo bus. I've got three guitar tracks going into it and I want to pan it left (and create a second that pans three other guit tracks right). It ain't doin' a darned thing. It's weird.

Another weird thing is I wanted to put Perfect Space on the bus to see how it sounded but when I went to load a preset all the folders were empty. I've used PS on tracks and it was fine. Urgh.

Is it just in your current project? Does another project behave the same way?

I can't even pan the tracks. This bad. They are completely masking the bass.

Could you have inadvertently created an automation somewhere that is locking the pan into position?

I've only done some volume edits and those were on the lead tracks. These are the rhythm tracks. The only pan fader that seems to be doing anything is the Master bus (so I know it's not an interface setting). This is very frustrating.

Any difference if you bypass all FX bins? How about if the tracks feeding the bus are switched to mono?

So I was using the Pan fader just above the slider in the console. I realize there's ANOTHER pan at the top of the strip. Turning it to the left made no change but turning it to the right complete turned off the signal. What the heck?!

A pan knob at the top of the CV strip? I'm not in front of SONAR, but I really can't think what that would be..

Yeah, tracks have input gain trims whereas busses also have input pan knobs as well. I've never messed with them so I'm not sure what it is for...

There's a Gain and a Pan knob at the very top of the Console strips. I also see a "Sends" section that is grayed out that has a Level and Pan knob but I can use them probably because the bus is going to the Master.

So tell me this... when you guys turn the pan knob directly above the slider on a bus in the Console View it pans that bus left and right... correct? Is there anything special that needs to be done to make it do this? These are mono audio tracks if that makes a difference... but it shouldn't.

Oh yeah... Input trim and pan > FX bin > > sends > output pan and fader. I would still try disabling all FX Bins, check bus pan, then change tracks to mono, check bus pan. It sounds like you might have stereo tracks feeding a stereo bus, or with stereo FX.

This is making me completely insane. I thought maybe it had something to do with the "Sends" section of the strip even though I can hear the sound from the bus and all the effects I've applied to it. So I clicked the little + sign on that section a selected Master to send to. Well that just made a huge mess of slapback delay BUT the pan knob on that section actually seem to be doing something. Not actually panning hard left or right but there was an audible difference... but completely unusable. So I switch the send to None to get back to where I was (which worked) and tried to disable that section so it's grayed out again. It wouldn't gray out which doesn't matter I guess but yeah... starting to get a little red in the face here. Guess I have dig through all the manuals to see what I'm doing wrong. This project just doesn't want to end.

Blargh! I just opened up my very first project to try it out and sure enough the mono AND stereo tracks were panning properly. I sent one of each (one mono and one stereo track) to their own stereo busses and they panned correctly from the busses as well. I'm out of ideas and ready to set fire to this project. I can't believe that at THIS stage it's gonna be a washout over something so simple.

@Stonehenge... Nope. No mods and haven't done anything remotely fancy. Maybe the project is corrupt. Who knows, maybe when I open it up again it'll be fine. In fact I think I'm gonna check out earlier incarnations of it and see what happens. Cheers.

I just went to a really early version of the project, turned off the effects so I was just getting the line input of the the guitar and still couldn't get it to pan. What a waste of time. This project is now officially garbage. I am ever so disappointed. It was my first real tune with X1 and I've spent DOZENS of hours screwing with it over the past month.

Don't bin it though Beep. You should be able to rescue much of it by importing stuff into a new project somehow. It is mainly audio I presume?

To import all this into a new project will take forever. Most of my time was spent setting up all the tracks and busses. It's massive. I was gonna use it as a template. I also just looked at all the audio settings and compared them to the other project that was panning and it's all exactly the same. I have no idea how I managed to screw this up. I'm gonna go scour the troubleshooting section of this site to see if maybe something is there. One weird thing is in the output section it's listing Focusrite Left Mon but no Right (and not even an option for Right) but that's the same way it is set on the project that is panning. My brain hurts. :-(

I just tried Safe Mode with no plug ins at all and got the same result. So I tried sending one of the tracks straight to the master instead of the bus and it still wouldn't pan. This is crazy.
