[Answered] X1 Expanded - Proprietary? what about all my other plugins

Is the Pro channel designed to make the system more proprietary so I would not be able to use my Waves, Lexicon, Elysia, etc plugins at some point?  I know I don't have to upgrade, but the newest versions always seem to get the most support (or feedback anyway) so I always feel like I need to upgrade.  I see that they will be releasing additional modules for the expanded version, but at $50 a pop for something I probably already have, it sounds suspicious that I would need to buy these to use this software - unless I am misunderstanding and can use any plugins with the upgrade and Prochannel etc.

Removing VST support could prove that theory correct.
    They haven't.

I don't think Cakewalk would ever consider doing that unless it took some seriously nasty LSD. They depend on plugins just as much as plugins depend on Sonar. People would simply move to Cubase if they did this.

I think they are just trying to get us excited with more knobs and dials - we like that kind of thing don't we boys and girls?

I am curious though, why update to a Pro Channel Gate when you already have a decent VST gate? Performance? Pretty graphics? Lighter credit card?

I'm confident you'll always be able to use standard VSTs with Sonar. You just won't get a nifty prochannel GUI with them. In fact, FX Chains 2.0 in expanded is all about VSTs. So don't worry about your plugins :)

Prochannel is just a built-in set of per-track plugins. Initially it was a compressor, EQ, and saturator. Expanded has added a new saturator and made Prochannel modular to accomodate add-ons and customizing your plugin chain. You don't have to use it at all if you don't want, any third party VST/DX plugins you want can still be used in the FX bins.

If I wasn't doing this I'd just be doing something else...

Yeah you're reading the wrong bullet points if you drew that conclusion.

Pro-Channel is keyed to SONAR only, but lots of other DAWs plugs work like that. And FX-Chains 2.0 is as open as can be. In fact, it's designed to wrap around whatever 3rd party VSTs you want.

They are trying to give Sonar a built in console type vibe with lots of console sound candy, in ADDITION to being a host DAW for compatible plugins.

    Im glad they went there.

Hi dalgtr and welcome to the forum.

Alex and others pretty much hit the nail on the head, well maybe not the part about LSD I think it would require some really good LSD to get us to drop VST support.

Is the Pro channel designed to make the system more proprietary so I would not be able to use my Waves, Lexicon, Elysia, etc plugins at some point?

No not at all - SONAR has and will continue to support VST.

Well stay off the good stuff then Willy.  Only take the street-bought LSD.  We love our VSTs, and the hippies can keep their hair. ;-)

Come on Willy, get somebody to update this forum software (you must all understand the issues by now).... my browser cannot take no more Captain... and you must be losing customers by the dozen (people have a low attention span when it comes to misfunctioning web pages). Whilst they are at it that problem report form is a pain as well....
It's your shop window, right now the window is broken.
