Antonio Lauro

I need help critiquing this.  Concentrate on how cheap my guitar sounds through the mic. (it's not a cheap one, the guitar).  Before, with Lagrima  I was going directly to the console.

    David,

Sounds pretty good to me.  A tad bit of reverb for my taste but the playing and overall recording quality is good.

That was really nice David. I liked the reverb and I wouldn't have marked it down as a cheap mic, sounds like a nice capture. The ending cut off abruptly though.

Cheap? I don't think so. Listening on my phone through a pair of decent cans sounds amazing. I can tell it's mic'd rather than DI but it doesn't sound worse it just sounds different.

I love the light and shade of your playing David - fabulous technique. One crit - you should have let the note ring at the end of the recording.

Ditto to the above on the "cheap" aspect... it just does not sound it at all.   The tone of the guitar sounds pretty good from here, but it's also played well which of course helps a lot.   Personally, I liked the reverb - I think it added a nice vibe.    Just let that ending breathe for a second already.

It sounds good to me on PC multimedia speakers. One thing I noticed, though, is there is a lot of hiss just before the guitar comes in. Sounds like tape hiss, but if you're recording digitally there should be no hiss at all. Did you record at a super low level and then crank it up for the mix? Maybe that is affecting the sound quality. (Also, maybe that's why you cut it off so abruptly at the end...?)

    Lovely playing, though.

I hear the hiss as well.  It sounds kind of like an old 78!  A lot of my colleagues record the guitar at a really low level, because the db's are relatively low on a classical guitar.  But, I normalized it, I think that might have been a mistake.

Instead of normalizing, maybe record hotter and limit the peaks. Or if you don't want to rerecord it, process the track with a big gain boost and then apply a peak limiter. I've never normalized anything, so I don't know if it can cause that phantom "tape" hiss, but maybe it's the reason you think it sounds cheap.

I think it sounded good. Add a couple of different flourishes to spice it up.

I didn't really hear the hiss, but I've got tinnitus, so there's always hissing in my life. But... sometimes a monitor or other device, such as a computer sitting too close to the mixer, can cause transients or hiss. And, depending on what type of reverb you're using, that can cause issues, even if it is digital.

    Hi, David,

Dynamite job on this very tasteful classical guitar instrumental!  There's really nothing like a solo acoustic guitar beautifully played, and nicely captured!

There’s certainly nothing “cheap” sounding about this!  I think the thick reverb gives it a sort of “live café” feel that lends authenticity to the Flamenco style vibe.

Great stuff, have a good one, my friend!
