Any Advantage Uninstalling Sonar 8.5.3?

Hello All and Happy Holidays!

I have Sonar X1 installed and working like a charm.. I'm still in the learning curve but it looks like a winner for what I do with it..

I purchased the Sonar 8.5 to X1 upgrade.  Is there any need or advantage to uninstalling 8.5.3 besides regaining some disc space? I'd hate to upset the apple cart!

none that i know of other than freeing up a little space.     i still have my 8.5 installed in case i get to frusterated I can always go back and do what i need in 8.5  till i find out how to in X1.

i still have problems importing some files to X1 that 8.5  can open.     so i have to open 8.5  import the file  then export it as wave so X1 can read it.

If you remove it, you may have to reinstall some plug-ins. So unless you're really hurting for disk space, I would just leave it.

Thanks all! I guess in these days of 1T hard drives, disc space is no longer a concern.. I'll just leave it! Scott, when is the X1 book due? I've been buying your books for a while now!

Yeah,  I removed 8.5.3 and lost my V Vocal edit capability.  I regained it by re-installing X1 - and to make sure that there were not other things that I lost and was unaware of.

As long as you are on your trek to learn and make X1 the future for your DAW - I am not sure there IS any reason to uninstall it???

I have a similar question... I had HS7XL on before I upgraded to X1 Essential, and read the little bit in the first readme that it was best not to install X1 over any other version (as in, in the same dir), and decided to keep it simple so I uninstalled HS7XL before installing X1.  Now I'm wondering if there were any plugins or utilities in HS7XL (like stuff in the XL pack) that I could have kept and used in X1?  I ask because one of my previous projects had used session drummer 2, and when I loaded it with X1 it couldn't load that plugin (so I switched to using SI-drum).  Should I have kept the XL pack plugins/utilities?

Yes, you could have kept it installed and then used Session Drummer 2 with X1. You still might be able to install Session Drummer 2 by itself if you select Advanced Install during the XL installation and choose only SD2 to be installed, but I'm not sure if that's possible. You'll have to try it.

I don't understand why there was a suggestion to uninstall anything before installing X1.  I have Home Studio 6, Home Studio 7, Sonar 8.3, Sonar 8.5, and X1 all on this machine.  If there are problems caused by this--so far I'm unaware of them.

The potential issue would be the overwriting of shared plugins and such, since cakewalk installs different versions of the software in a common shared directory.  Even though it creates a unique dir for each version installed, they all share the program files/cakewalk directory, which holds a lot of common files.  So, for example, X1 could install a new version of a plugin, overwriting the version that 8.5.3 was using, and then 8.5.3 might choke on the new plugin code.
This is all just "might happen", nothing that I've experienced.  But I'm a software engineer, and it could certainly cause issues unless the developers took steps to avoid it.  And one of the readme files in the downloaded package seemed to recommend uninstalling previous versions, so I took that as a warning.
