Any Preppers Out There?
For the last five years or so Ron Paul and a few others have been predicting an upcoming economic disaster that will make 2008 pale in comparison. But the main stream media (for the most part) has said the economy is getting stronger.
All fiat currencies evenually impload and with our debt and quantitative easing policies it seems a question of 'when' and not 'if'.
Lately I've noticed more and more main stream news sources are starting to run similar type stories.
I did a search on youtube and I was amazed how many people are taking this seriously.
Any preppers out there?
I live in earthquake country so I always have a few weeks water and canned foods and medical supplies but some of these preppers are preparing for WW3.

I took a prepper test to see how long I would live after the SHTF, based on how much ammo, food, emergency power, etc I had I would last 35 minutes

2008-9 wiped me out. I went from having multiple houses and vehicles while working on a PhD (so, unfortunately, not at a job) with a 811 FICO score (having never had a late payment) to living in a friend's extra room without a car and barely finding a place for my Mom to live. Oh yeah, I lost over $821,000 yet "they" still claimed I owed $168k (I didn't). It took me two years to earn enough money to go bankrupt. It was so much fun to start over as I approached 50 years of age. Especially since I am, apparently, unemployable. All of the jobs in my primary industry (IT) wanted to see two years of recent experience and certifications (which I never needed before). All of the low-level jobs I applied for just to be able to eat and survive (CostCo, Fred Meyer, QFC, UPS, etc., etc.) either never replied or said they couldn't pay me what I was worth and that I would simply leave them as soon as a real paying job came along (Really???). I've made it this far by doing side work (mostly IT stuff) for friends that own businesses. By the end of this month I should FINALLY be back to zero. I should have enough extra to pay off the friends that gave me loans (to buy a cheap car and simply live) as well as just enough to cover month-to-month expenses. So how did I get screwed? I was one of the few who put down a LOT on each house and was paying my loans on time (so I didn't qualify for the programs that helped those that put down nothing and paid nothing keep their homes). There was several illegal practices done by the banks, but even the law-suit against B of A that I was part of only got me $1,485 (I lost over $590,000 to them). Basically, if you played by the rules, you got screwed. I've got a few more stories, but you get the picture. Bah.
Time for all of you to head over to Beyond My DAW!

I'm pretty sure any discussion of economics will quickly descend into politics and get the thread closed. But maybe I'm just being cynical....

This is something I have researched and here is the bad news- on average there is a big crash every seven years in the fall. 2001, 2008, 2015 So we are due. I could say more but that would get into religion so I better not. :)

My theological research tells me that after seven lean years, seven fat years will follow. (This is not religon, just theological research)

Well that is part of what is interesting, every so often instead of a big crash there seems to be the opposite, a sharp increase for seven years. The pattern was broken of dips in 1994 when instead of a crash everything went up for seven years and was part of the reason 2001 was so bad.

Actually, even Gantt knows that the cycle isn't seven years. Actually, you won't be able to even identify a cycle if you don't understand things like Euclidean geometry and difference between Heliocentric emphemeris and Geocentric. Heck, chaos theory and music theory both come into play as well.

Around 1959 my uncle Eddie built a really nice bomb shelter in his basement. People were doing that in those days. He had a party to celebrate the completion and show off the reinforced walls and supplies of food and water. He was definitely prepped. He was a heavy smoker. One day he collapsed at home and was dead of lung cancer a few months later. His wife, also a heavy smoker, died of lung cancer a few years later. So did his brother, my dad. It's really hard to know what the real dangers are. Mitch_I

Oh, heck. Now I've gone and ruined the tone of the thread. On another note, about three years ago a friend of mine told me he was sure of two things: (1) there'd be a major terrorist attack at the London Olympics, and (2) the banking and financial system would collapse by the end of the summer. He was all prepped for that. Should I remind him of those predictions? Mitch I.

My rule regarding economics is that I put zero trust in what anyone says if they aren't a billionaire yet.
In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

Kind of reminds me of my old economics teacher at school. He was very passionate while teaching us about the financial markets and their potential to make money for the financially astute. To which my friend Fergus raised his hand and said "Sir, how come you're a teacher and not a banker?" Kinda stumped him.

Let's be honest here. There's really only one reason to prepare for disaster by building a secure bunker and stocking it with everything required for your survival: More time in the studio. I mean, what is a bunker but a really well stocked man cave?

Why bother? If it gets really bad, food, water and such will only make you a target for the angry mobs that did nothing to prepare. The only worthwhile prep IMO is an isolated destination with the means to quickly get there. Think about what has happened in just about every densely populated area that has suffered some sort of disaster.

You may have a point When it gets really bad you need some usefull skills like distilling alcohol. Alcohol has many applications: recreational, medicinal, hygienic and it burns. You can make it out of rotten produce and it's a great product to barter. It's time for me to take a course on moonshining and start practicing.
