Any Way To Copy / Paste An Envelope?

Ever since envelopes were introduced in SONAR (cake pro audio? can't remember how far back the feature goes) I've been wishing there was a quick/easy way to apply a created envelope to other clips and/or tracks. I'm just getting back into recording again after a fairly long layoff and once again I'd love to be able to copy/paste envelopes but I still don't see a way to do it. Am I just missing it? For example, I have 4 tracks with harmony vocals and I'd like to envelope the same clip on each or them to modify the end of the wave exactly the same on all 4 clips. Creating the same envelope 4 times is a chore.

When you copy & paste, there is a "Track/Bus Automation" option in the Paste dialog box.

Yes, but it seems to only be there so you can copy it along with a clip. I wasn't able to copy the envelope alone. Were you?

Select the clip with an envelope.

When you copy, make sure track/bus automation is ticked, BUT events in tracks is unticked.

You can then paste just the envelope to another track - choose the blend old with new option and select paste into existing clips

this only works with track envelopes NOT clips envelopes

VJ, you mixed saying "clips" and "tracks" in that post so liberally that it contradicts itself but I think I understand what you were trying to say: envelopes cannot be copied between CLIPS but can be copied between TRACKS.

Of course I tried that exact procedure before posting. When working with copying clips, CLIP AUTOMATION cannot be selected without also selecting EVENTS IN TRACKS.

I thought I might have had a workaround but it failed:

    1) copy source clip events and automation to a new track
    2) edit the audio event gain to -inf so you have a clip with automation only
    3) copy and paste desired audio into empty clip - BUT YOU CAN'T PASTE INTO THE EXISTING EMPTY CLIP

    Anyway to make that work?

Your question is a little confusing. But, I think I know what you mean.
There are 2 types of envelopes for controlling level.
a track volume envelope and a clip gain envelope.
The track volume envelopes can be copy/pasted via VJ's discription above.
the clip gain envelopes cannot be copied. It is a royal pain, I agree.
I don't see why cakewalk didn't just create a clip gain envelope on every clip by default.
I believe the options for clip envelopes are more expansive in X1.

Why not send the 4 vocal parts to a new bus & automate the volume/envelope of the bus?  Sometimes the answer is so simple that it's not always as obvious as one would hope....

That is a good workaround I hadn't thought of, thanks!. I'd still like to be able to copy envelopes between clips and not be forced to bus 'em tho'.  I tend to think of busses as a "higher level" mixing tool than the operation I was doing.
