Any advice on Msvcr71.dll issue?

Last week i couldnt install a midi controller because of a missing "msvcr71.dll" so i downloaded a freeware program that allegedly replaced it but it didnt, so i did a complete  PC reinstall of everything except 8.5.3 and all was fine, now just today i went to install 8.5.3 and "msvcr71.dll" is missing again preventing the installation.

Whats likely to be the issue here? and is there any program even if i have to buy it that would prevent this from happening?

Any help or advice at all will be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Damon.

The dll is part of the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime library. That is a set of programs that are called by programs compiled under that language, so that thos little programs do not need to be part of the compiled program. The library or its components are typiclly included with the program (in your case driver) distribution on a CD etc. The runtime library comes in various versions and if you have the wrong version for the calling program there can be problems.

You also need to have the dll in the location that the calling program expects. That location varies depending on the version of Windows you are using, so even if you got the correct version from one of the "free dll" sites it might not be installed in the directory (folder) that it needs to be in. Or the installation program may have put it in a non-standard location. Or you may be running the installation or the program from an account that does not have permissions to access the dll file where it is located.

The first and easiest thing to do is look on the device manufacturer's site for a driver installation package for the device that is specifically designed for Win7 64. Or check their support site to see if they have instructions on how to fix this.

Since the attempt to install Sonar 8.5 failed:

You can probably get the solution to your problem from Cakewalk support.

The missing dll should probably be in the same folder as your Sonar 8.5 files. After wiping out your previous system, did you try to install a download version of Sonar 8.5 without first reinstalling Sonar 8.0? I think that the 8.5 DVD includes everything needed to do a clean install, but the download requires that earlier versions of Sonar 8 already be resident on the system. The VB runtime files may be part of the stuff that is missing in the download version. If so then installing the prior version of Sonar before trying 8.5 may solve the problem as well as some others.

You may need to install Sonar as an administrator to avoid permission/access problems. The process is described here:
