Any advice on using the T-RackS Pultec EQP-1A?

I have struggled to use this EQ. Does anyone have any preferred uses/settings or suggestions on how to start with it? I like the marketing speach of "musical", but it hasn't clicked for me yet! :)

PS: LOVE the Black and White! So much so that I ordered the ARC and can't wait to play with it this weekend.

James, check out Groove3's T-Racks tutorial on this as it covers all the plugs for the Deluxe. There's also some Youtube vids on this.

    Hi James,

I tend to use a Pultec style EQ for very specific purposes...
Not as a substitute for a fully parametric EQ.

    The Pultec is great for:
    • Adding "air" to the high end of vocals (without sounding harsh)
    • Adding high-end "sheen" on cymbals (again without sounding harsh)
    • Adding mid articulation to vocals
    • Adding mid articulartion to the "snap" of the kick drum
    • Adding beefy low end to kick drum
    • Adding mid articulation to snare drum (crack)

FWIW, I wouldn't want to be without a Pultec style EQ.
Far too many scenarios where it's a perfect fit.

    Best Regards,

Jim, thank you! I have some overheads I will try this on for the cymbals. Have you ever put it after a more surgical EQ, say one that applies a high pass filter on an overhead bus?

A little presentation I remember checking out just before I bought my first Pultec (IK's). Not that you'll learn much but it's an introduction.

Thanks guys! I purchased the Groove3 videos and I'm half way through. I also watched the video on the Pultec and all have been helpful. I have the IK ARC system coming tomorrow and I don't want to do any more mixing until it's here, but I can't wait to try some of these techniques over the weekend! :)

Just remember ARC is ***ONLY*** to be used when listening to your mix through your monitors (not headphones either). NEVER have ARC turned on for an export. That is a common first mistake that some have made.

Hi Bapu, This is something I definitely gathered from reading the docs, and I can see how it would be easy to forget even when you know to do it. Maybe Sonar needs a way to flag a plugin to be disabled on export or mix down... Thanks for taking the time to point out this potential problem. :) I LOVE gadgets and can't wait to get to play with this one!

    SSF,

ARC improved my mixes (by even more than 20-40% ).

Just make sure you measure 20 positions. The instructions only show how to do 12-14 (don't recall exact number) but I just extrapolated the given pattern to 20 positions. I thank Danny Danzi for suggestiong ARC and telling me how to best set it up.

Yeah, it would be great if SONAR could have an "ignore/disbale on export" option for an FX. In fact I'm gonna go make a feature request right now.

I have T-rackS 3 deluxe, and the standalone player incorporates ARC if you have it. BUT..... you still have to disable it before processing the file, so im guessing that if IK multimedia can't incorporate that feature into their own software, it may not be possible for cakewalk to implement it either...... Or can they??? DA DA DAAAAA!!... (suspense music) Bibs

Oh, CW could incorporate a "bypass on export" capability. It's just a question of "will they".

Couldn't hurt to have a few (hundred) of us request it here-> http://www.cakewalk.com/Support/FeatureRequest.asp

Thanks for the advice on doing 20 positions! I look forward to running some reference songs through and seeing what it does to them.
