Any chance for a project5 v3.0?

Does anyone know if project5 is being actively developed anymore? I haven't tried sonar for like 3 versions but I doubt that it has the unique workflow in project5 that I learned to love.

If they are they are keeping very quiet about it. This has become such a FAQ here that I think it should be stickied ;)

yes please do so ;) I know alot of people that just LOVE project5 because truly, as far as I know, correct me if I'm wrong, there's nothing out there quite like the workflow of Project5. It needs to mature and improve to a fullgrown piece of software. Right now it's more of a inspiration booster or idea tester or even a producer system but still for simple purposes. I can't believe why there isn't more of project5 in sonar than there is.

Its still quite a capable piece of software. The only real show stopper for me is the multiproc limitation, however spend money on DSP cards instead of processors and things should run smoothly again.

I agree, that is the biggest issue with it. Hasn't anyone experimented with wiring it around somehow to create 2 instances?
How would DSP cards help if playing vsti's is the primary source of sound?

Someone will eventually chime in that he KNOWS it won't be updated and it's OBVIOUS that it won't be updated. Please ignore that person, whomever he is. No one has any idea whether Cakewalk will revisit P5, including, probably, Cakewalk.

Maybe they have something even better up their sleeves (with an upgrade path for existing P5 owners, of course.)

Given that Project 5 is the best midi/vst host in it's class, it's just so unbeleiveable that Cakewalk may drop it.....! How can that be? They have a unique product.... and no one can suggest a really good alternative, on any forum.

If Cakewalk don't develop it further hopefully they will sell it to someone who will...........

I can just once again agree. It's a fantastic idea, a great concept. Perhaps not the best workflow for a big studio with insane needs, but for the rest of us it's a fantastic, refreshing way of making music. I come from the tracker world (yeah I know I'm old!) and when I turned into the midi world I never really felt at home again. With project5 it was like someone knew exactly what I wanted and made it. It's a fantastic program, truly!

They are probaly having to totally redo the audio engine for multi-processor support and efficiency enhancements. My guess would be is it's going to be a subset of Sonar and the audiosnap technology the Beatscape has. Since they didn't roll P5 into Sonar 8 I'd have a hard time believing P5 is dead. It's more like in an induced coma.

Forgive me if I am a little cynical at this point, but would it really matter to most if V3 comes out? Its like buying stock in Enron at this point. The damage has been done. I am realizing that I need software that grows with me. P5 died a few years ago and Cakewalk didn't even have the decency to hold a proper funeral.

Folks, is there a glaring omission in the current P5 v2.5 which keeps you from using this latest version?

    No.

And to make matters for Cakewalk worse,

I use P5 while I save up for Sonar8. But P5 flat out smokes my SonarHS6 in workflow. So what am I saving up for?

Strange times indeed. But great for my P5 sessions!

If I recall correctly, at least one person said on this forum that they stopped using P5 because something else was better. What exactly is better and why? I know many people lament that P5's volume meter is quite basic and there could be minor things done to make the workflow even better, but by and large I can't think of anything which keeps me from making music with P5, even if it takes a bit longer without the minor improvements many people would like to see.

Uh, there was a comment by the bakers in an interview recently, they pretty much said there's no active work or plans for P5 at the moment (this was about a month ago, right after S8 launched).

I think they're gonna sit on it until they figure out what tech they can port over.

Do you mean a few years ago before they last updated it? It hasn't been that long. I might grant that we're a year past an expected update, since they said there would be another one in 2007. Some people argue that 2.5.1 was that update, but I think that was clearly not the intent at the time.

Anyway, it would matter a whole lot to me. I have no other DAW and no plans to buy one. Every time I look into another one, I'm drawn back to the simplicity of P5, and I decide that it's worth working with the limitations. Perhaps at some point that won't make sense any longer but if there were another update it would probably keep me on P5 for a long time.

Having said that, I'm not expecting an update. I think the realities of Cakewalk priorities even before Roland made it difficult to keep it fed. With Roland in the mix I'm sure it became even harder.

I understand that P5 V2.5 is a fine little ap that could be fine for some people for the next five years AS IS. There still are many people who have a single core CPU, but the norm is two and 4 is very popular amongst power users, like those who use computers to create music. VST technology continues to improve. God knows, M$ may even come up with a better OS in the next few years that is a dream for DAW users, although there are no guarantees that P5 V2.5 will run on that OS.

Why am I a little ticked? I started with Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 in 1998/99. As I matured as a composer so did Sonar. I stopped at Sonar 6 because I bought into Live 5 and soon after P5 V2 because I prefer the non-linear approach to composing. Sonar 6 seemed to be the turning point in quality as the new features in Sonar 7 proved to be more trouble than benefit. I won't even start with Sonar 8, one just has to see the once emphatic Sonar board now to understand what's going on. P5 is in a coma for a long time now, with not even a peep from Cakewalk. Cakewalk seems to have abandoned their desire to please their clientele. It's like the reverted back to the late 90's where profits are king, not the client. Well, we all learned from the 90's that the best way to earn profits is to earn the ongoing trust of your clients. I am losing my trust in Cakewalk. My fear is that Cakewalk is developing an Enron-like approach to its business, and we all know how that story ends up.

Let's hope and pray that Justin doesn't cave in like the rest of them and destroy Reaper. It may be our last hope.

To be honest I think that its a little unfair to point the finger at Sonar and say that it was a turning point in quality after V6, they have some very good new features on both 7 and 8, and I think that you will find that a huge majority of users are probably using it without too many problems. However these people dont voice their opinion on the forum because they do not have any troubles that would bring them there, or bring them to comment.

The increase in the negative posts could well be simply because they are shifting more boxes. Best example look at the cubase forums, which has more users , and more complaints, just after a new version is released. Again the majority of Cubase users are probably not hitting problems, but looking at forums will usually tell a much different story.

Ive been using Sonar 7, and Sonar 8 and had very few problems, although V8.01 broke a few things for me, I would reckon that they are quickly working on this to rectify it.

well all this thread contains is speculation ;) but don't we just all love that, to speculate? ;) I still have hope for it, and it's still listed in a decent way on the cakewalk site so I still have some hope. Guess time will tell!

Nothing really, just the usual pattern of events after a new release.

Stage 1 - Awe and wonder at all the new sparkly things in the package
Stage 2 - Making way for annoyance after you start picking up the small (or sometimes big) bugs that occur in the program
Stage 3 - Anger at the lack of speed with bug fixes
Stage 4 - A bit of back slapping after the bug fix release comes out to say thanks for fixing it
Stage 5 - A Smaller number of users who still have bug issues become very vocal about the problems they have

Very often the problems people have are actually down to user error. However the majority jump on the bandwagon and start blaming Cakewalk for it. Sometimes its justified, the majority it isnt.

As you can imagine the more users that buy Sonar with each upgrade leads to an increase in the posts about all of the above.

EDIT - I missed out a few things, hardware incompatibility is frequently a factor as well. Although Im always bemused when you see people posting about not getting Sonar to work with a Realtek onboard sound interface. Who would buy a £300+ program without first researching what you need to use it.

Cakewalk has changed the scope and marketing focus for their Home Studio product (Sonar's little brother).

    http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.asp?m=1531208&mpage=2&key=

basically they've stripped out some features to have an easy to use entry level product that HS was meant to be
so now they have to appease veteran Home Studio users who had grown accustomed to the more advanced features with an upgrade offer to Sonar

It's a bit of messiness either way
but at least Cakewalk continues to support that product - which may be much easier as I assume it's based on the same Sonar internals
and it does show some movement with a software product other than Sonar (but as I said closely related)

I don't think a new stripped back version of P5 would be the answer we're looking for

I cannot recommend a host that has a workflow similar to P5, but since you come from a tracker background, you might be interested in Renoise.

I'm not interested in a tracker approach anymore, I just figured that background made me see P5 differently ;)

I was kind of affraid that sonar 7+8 took the classic approach of being bigger, heavier, slower, eating more memory, demanding more cpu etc while not really adding anything essential? I kind of felt that way with sonar 5 I think, but I just accepted it and went on with my (music)life. Is sonar 7+8 even worse in this sense? haven't tried anything after sonar 6.
