Any experience with Sonarworks Reference 3?
Does anyone have experience with the product above for headphone calibration? would you say that it's a Must if you want to mix with headphones? I'm doing my very first mix and I'm mixing on studio headphones (not consumer headphones). I bought cheap monitors, mostly intented for multimedia/video editing, which I will be using as additional reference.

just google sonarworks and cakewalk forums...lots on this already in the forums. And YES, it is widely used here and considered indispensable.

What should I be hearing better when using the plugin? ...is it better stereo image? if so, I have the monitors for that (although I won't be mixing everyting on them, as they are not real studio monitors as mentioned). Should I focus on hearing specific areas when using the plugin? Sorry for the re-post, but need some clarification as a newbie.

I've been mixing with headphones for about 7 years. More often than not it was very difficult to get my mixes to translate well on different speakers. Sounded great in the cans, but terrible on PC speakers or in the car. Got it to sound good in the car, then my stereo's Infinities sounded like crap. And on and on. Started using Sonarworks Reference and like magic my mixes began to translate better on all the speakers! The calibration really does give a much flatter frequency response, therefore there were no more frequencies building up or getting lost. My $.02, buy it, use it, you won't regret it.

I love this plugin. I just wanted to add that you'll want to either have a set of cans that the software supports or buy a pair of pre-calibrated headphones directly from sonarworks.

I've been using it for a year. It's changed my whole mixing experience. I wouldn't think of mixing without it.

I tried the demo version and used the preset for my AKG K240 Studio headphones. Would you agree that the overall sound is not very good when you turn it on? clearly this is not what it was meant for (you wouldn't release something with this as an effect!). I can imagine that it will bother me a little bit during mixing, as I "feel" the music a little bit less, if you know what I mean. I'm thinking about using it for checking (and correcting) if things are all right, here and there, while mixing. How do you guys use it...?

Mix to what you are now hearing. Your ears will get used to it. I don't use it when tracking or composing in MIDI, but when I start the "mixing" phase, I don't turn it off. Are you using cans that are supported? Don't forget to turn it off before exporting or bouncing the entire mix.

I bought ATH-M50X, which is supported. I have downloaded the demo as well. Now where do I begin?

Hi,absolutely not. I my sonarworks experience the sound is really close at my monitor's systems(Tascam and H&K with Arc system), i have done a little fixes with a low bass tilt section. Are you sure that Sonarwork is the last of the master bus chain? You can check it on different projects for sure. Good luck

I'm using sonarworks plug-in for a couple of month and I remember how disappointed I've been when I enabled it for the first time. My headphones sounded way better without the plug-in - that's what I thought. But my ears got used to this "unexpected" sound actually quite fast - especially during mix sessions (and not listening to my favourite reference tracks, which was my first test and, as I mentioned above, disappointing). Long story short: My mixes now translate better on different systems than before, so I'm glad I didn't follow my first impression to ditch it. Like jatoth I also don't use it when tracking because it's not necessary and keeps latency low.

Sorry to resurrect an older thread, but the Audio-Technica ATH-M70x just got added to Sonarworks and I'm considering getting this plugin for them. Are most people just simply downloading the profiles for their headphones or are they sending their headphones in to get custom calibrated? Can I expect worthwhile results from just the downloadable profile? Thanks!

In my personal experience I would say yes. The bottom end has been easier to mix with headphones, imo.
