Any recommendations for small bass amp?

Any recommendations on a small bass amp in the $350 range?

I've always recorded bass DI but would like to venture into miking an amp.  I prefer tube amps and am thinking of probably a single speaker combo type setup.

This would just be for recording and not gigging.

I doubt you'll find a tube bass amp for $350.00. Best to just try out whatever you can - especially if you plan to mic it for recording. The low end combo's out there are all over the place as far as features, low end, hiss etc. goes. Best to try as many as possible when you're in that price range to find out if one will produce the tone(s) you want.

What price range do you think a tube amp would be in?

My opinion... don't do it. Buy this and stick with DI.

Thanks Dave.  But I'm an amp man.  My guitar tone has never been better since I went to amps.  I have played my bass through my guitar amp have really loved the warmth and harmonics I get, but it lacks the bottom end that a bass amp has.

Well this is the best bass amp I know of for under $350 (I have one - it's pretty good for small live situations). But I haven't had good luck miking it. But I wasn't using a bass specific mic. I have a Shure Beta52a now, though, and might give it a try. But miking a bass is a different animal than miking a guitar amp. If you have a buddy with a bass amp I'd suggest you borrow it and give it a try before you dump a bunch of money into it. You might be surprised how many top producers with access to all of the mics and amps they can get their hands on still will go DI on the bass.

A couple words of advice for you Marcos.

1:  Be very mindful of proximity effect when you mic a bass cab.

2:  Pay close attention to your mid-range when you mic the cab.  You're always gonna get plenty of bass....position your mic where you LOVE the mid-range.

3:  Split your bass signal so that you are tracking both direct AND through the amp.  Because you can blend the two (be mindful of phase, as the DI and MIC signal are often out of phase with each other), or you can use the DI signal to re-amp the bass track should you decide at mix time you hate what you captured.

4:  If you don't already have the Sansamp that Dave is suggesting.  Get one.  After you spend a few months fussing with bass amps, you'll probably discover that DI through the Sansamp REALLY IS killer and super simple.  :o)

I do both....or either....depending on what the bassist wants.  But MY bassist has a wonderful 73 Ampeg SVT, and all he ever brings for tracking is his Sansamp and a bass....

Sansamp is a good suggestion. I use one instead of an amp. (Usually split, so I have a clean signal as well to work with.)

Thanks for everybody's input.  I have experimented the DI mixed with miked amp technique.  I've played around using a smaller tube guitar amp and DI with some nice results.

I'm not too warm and fuzzy with all the DI boxes and tube emulators or amp sims.  I have a closet full of them from trying to get that tube guitar sound.  The money I wasted on these devices would have gone a long way towards a real amp.  There is no substitute for the real thing IMO.

I would be looking at something like this

    http://cgi.ebay.com/Trace...mp;hash=item41531761ee

    or like this...

    or like this...

    http://cgi.ebay.com/Ashdo...mp;hash=item255ce3ac4f

There are lots of nice *used* bass amps in that range. Not necessarily tube, but still ones that will give you a great sound. Obviously I'm biased towards British bass amps.

I also really like the Amplitube Ampeg sim.

    Hope that helps.

I think Scullsession pretty much covered everything. Miking a bass isn't the same as miking a guitar. Differences in the volumes of certain notes is one of the biggest problems, though you can get good results by mixing a miked bass track along with a DI signal. I usually just plug straight into a Presonus Eureka which works really well for bass but I have also used a Sansamp which I would highly recromend.

I purchased the Ashdown amp.  Should be here in a few days.  Even with shipping it cost right at $350 - my target price.  Will post some music with it when I get a chance to record.

Hope you enjoy it Marcos. I have always wanted an Ashdown since I tried one a few years ago. Great little amps IMO.

Received amp and love the way it sounds.

Here is my first recording with it.  http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.aspx?m=2108279
