Any tips for a clean install of PT 10.36 and PT11?

I've got my new DAW and the latest versions of PT 10.36 and PT11.

I have a clean install of SONAR and all my samples and efx tweaked.

I've got a latest disc image.

I'm scared of what I don't know... So, does anyone have any tips, heads ups or cautions that I should know before I try to install these two and not mess with my primary SONAR install?

For example I guess you let 10.36 install in C:\Programs (x86) and you install 11 in C:\Programs but I think I'm going to be left guessing when I start installing the extras.

Thanks.

best regards,
mike

Do you already have an earlier version of PT10.3.5 or earlier installed?  If so, uninstall it first.  As for installing PT10.3.6 and PT11.01 (make sure you have this latest version), yes, let it install it into the directories that you specified.  The RTAS/AAX plugins will be installed into the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Digidesign\DAE and C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Digidesign\DAE folders by default and there is no need to change that.  PT's installers are pretty good about installing everything where it needs to go.  You can specify your own directory for project files and, as always, it's a good idea to have them on a separate physical drive.

If v10.35 was previously installed, it'll be uninstalled (or you'll be prompted to uninstall) when you go to install v10.36.

Right now, there aren't a lot of 64Bit AAX plugins, so know up-front that the migration to 64Bit ProTools is going to take some time.

I use so few plug ins that I am thinking I may be one of the few happy campers with PT11.

What did you guys do when you were asked about the:

Avid HD driver (x64) and the DIGI Driver (x64) for PT 10.36

    or the

Avid HD driver (x64) and the Avid Ethernet Support for PT 11

    ???

I run my MOTU gear so I doubt I'd ever hook up to a HD card or a DIGI box.

I let them install, but I wondered if I should have just said "cancel".

    ???

I'm very happy with PT11.  I use VEP as a subhost for my VSTs (32/64-bit), so the wait for AAX2 plugins isn't a deal breaker.

It looks like you edited your post after I posted, so I should mention that I did install the ethernet driver earlier on when I had my Artist/MC Transport (which I subsequently sold).  If you have one of the Avid/Euphonix ethernet units, or plan to add one, then definitely install the driver.  But, I have read in the past that, in some rare instances, some people have had trouble with their internet after installing the ethernet driver, so if you don't need to install it, then you probably shouldn't.

    Thank you Dave,

I have disk image restored back to before the install and am installing now with your advice in mind.

    Thanks very much.

I found that for PT 10.36 I could not choose to not install the Avid HD driver (x64). It would let me choose not to install it but then it wouldn't install anything after that and ended up in an endless cycle of stating the the system needed a restart for changes to take effect, but then it would start the install from scratch and take me on the very same loop over and over. After I let it install the Avid HD driver (x64) it let me choose to not install the DIGI Driver (x64) and the install was able to finish with a restart.

With the PT11.01 install I was able to elect to not install the Avid HD driver (x64) and to not install the Avid Ethernet Support.

I'm assuming that the Avid HD driver (x64) is for the HD PCIe card.... Yes? No?

    Thanks again.

    best regards,
    mike

Like maybe I should ask upstairs about out how to get it to show up under Tools in 8.5.2 Classic Edition?
