Any try doing a mic mod?

I have a Blue Bluebird condenser mic. I was doing some searches on it the other day and came across this web site that specializes in mic mods.

Link

Then I went on line and found some do it yourself vids.

They want more to do the mod than the mic costs. My thinking is, why not just buy a mic in that total price range to begin with.

There are four things they do to the mic I have. They change the capacitors, take out the inner wind screen, reverse the outer wind screen, and replace the capsule.

I can do the wind screens and caps, but I just don't see the point in doing the capsule. At that point, it's new mic time imo.

Anyone ever try modding a mic or have one modded?

You're right, it sounds like more than a mod. The component changes are likely to make it work with their capsule. As you say, it's really a new mike in an old shell.

I used to mod the MXL FET mics when they first started coming over.. but all we were doing was swapping out the dirt cheap small electronic components for top of line ones.

We thought it helped... but we were just having fun.

I am in the process of building a cheap kit tube mic... but it seems like it would need a new capsule and transformer before I'll be using it as a mic... and I'm not up for adding that expense.

I don't think you can build a nice mic for less than you can buy it, but if you do want to diy assemble a nice mic the cheapest way to get the metal work is too buy a cheap mic.

The only sensible reason, in my opinion, to mod a mic is "just because".

I am doing it because I already have mics that I can trust and so it's just time for me to exercise some curiosity.

Some folks spend up to $2000 making faithful copies of the u47 by sourcing kit bodies and buying all the right parts... the real ones sell for $5,000 - $10,000 so maybe they are saving money... it's hard to say. For $2k you can get a pretty nice brand new factory mic. :-)

I think "just because" is a good reason.

    Anyways...

    best regards,
    mike

I've always felt mic mods were something to do with exactly like McQ just sed.

    I had my doubts when I first saw a right-angled SM-57.

Each to their own I guess.

Yup... sounds like a $7 cup of coffee to me...

I'd do the same thing you mentioned. If I was not happy with the mic, I'd spend the money on a new one before I "modded" the old one.
