Anybody got NI EMOTIVE STRINGS?
the sale on it looks interesting the demo sounded interesting I have session strings and ss pro so this looks like a nice compliment without overlapping I have Albilion redux but the phrases are limited, although I know you can roll your own any thoughts from users?

I dont have it. But it seems like it works like the action strings. Really looking forward to picking up a NI Komplete 11 with it when it comes out.

I have tried it, but it didn't wow me as much as I'd hoped. But they sound like strings and are easy to use. I just didn't feel like replacing my EWQLSO with these. If you can afford it, get Action Strings as well. They complement eachother well. The emotive strings are not for the hard hitting stuff. But if you only want to make softer orchestral parts - it might be worth it.

I looked real hard at Action Strings, too. I've pretty much got generic strings covered with Kirk Hunter and other libraries, but that one's kinda unique. BTW, what made me look at it wasn't NI's demos but Jarsve's expert use of it in his stuff.

You could take that one of two ways, Vastman. Either go ahead and get it, be the first one on your block and stand out from the crowd, or take that silence as an omen to stay away. To paraphrase Clint Eastwood, do ya feel lucky? Be sure to let the rest of us know how it goes.

Got it....It's quite lovely. First I spent the time rewatching Daniel James mega review/how he uses The first phrase based product, Action Strings... I have it, but gave up on it too soon so I loaded it up and spent a few hours noooodling around and realized how I've missed out not using it... Really great bowing not possible with my other libraries. Creating your own melodies, using the rhythmic ostinatums is absolutely fantastic and results in lots of unanticipated realistic riffing... his vid is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4LoB5ieUxY Needless to say, I then bit the bullet and spent the rest of the evening just noodling around with Emotive... I can say that I truly love both products, but Emotive even more... many ways to use them creatively and as I'm NOT an orchestral composer, I look forward to spicing up future songs with much better riffs. As a singer, I am good with melodies but my orchestral riffing sucks and these programs help a lot as they are real people doing the things real string players do... Emotive Strings will be perfect for some of my climate lament pieces. You get a zillion patterns/riffs/melodic phrasings and they are very flexible, with 10 keyswitchable phrases/rhythmic patterns available at all times... moving back and forth between patterns is pretty smooth... the possibilities are endless! And, again, what I love most, particularly with Emotive, is you really hear the searing bowing back and forth, which imparts an emotional feeling the Albions can't match. I'm happy... a good deal at $149 And, reflecting on it, the fewer that have it...the better! Indeed, as I hadn't fully explored Action Strings, it's like getting both!

Thanks for the review, Dana. It sure sounds good. The main hurdle I can't mentally get over is the feeling that such tools are cheating, much like building an "original" song out of loops. I almost never use loops or sequences, even for extremely tedious elements such as shakers and tambourines. It's a small matter of pride that every hit and note in every song was purposefully placed there by me. But then honesty has always been my handicap, which is why I could never go into politics.

this has been an argument raging over at VI Control for ages... 30 billion comments on both sides... I come out fealing it's another tool... just like Albion one string runs, Damage drum riffs, arpeggiated synth lines, multi kontakt program sets, Choirs... I mean, dude... you can't play a violin, you aren't hiring a 20 piece orchestra or set of humans... isn't that cheating? I love Geddy Lee's bass tone... Found what I feel is close on Greg's Rick bass... is my go to sound now, even though I have two ibanez basses... is that cheating? How many use Ozone??? Definately cheating... by some definitions... I love Fab's Timeless2... use it on every vocal to create a certain "sound"... cheating?BFD has some wicked patterns/drums... I hate programing drums, and I surely can't play real ones... is that cheating? When Skippy and Airwave got together and did a kick butt soundset for Omnisphere I instantly vamped on several amazing "multies" and wrote 5 or 6 songs in a night... it allowed a stream of consciousness on a list of issues I wanted to address... and evoked things from within that would not have ever "erupted" had I not bought "Airwave"...Is an awesome groove from omnisphere which underpins a song cheating? Is Greg's amazing Guitarz libraries cheating? I have a lovely fan fretted tele and baratone strat but still enjoy bringing up an awesome stratosphere sound, maybe a rhythm, and vamp to stimulate an idea which just unfolds extemporaneously... Indeed, within my cottage studio it is literally a pain and waste of time to try and accurately/cleanly record my real guitars... and my fingers are going arthritic... so is that cheating? I chuckle at contrived boxes... they all depend on a perspective... Remember all the furor and threats to make it illegal to sample in some quarters? Now I have Albion One at my fingertips! Finally, in the end... none of the emotive phrases amount to a hill of beans without proper triggering, innovative mixing/modulating among them, adding vocals, other instruments, rhythms, and blah blah blah... Whereas it's a matter of pride for you to know "every note" was intentionally placed there by you I approach it all very differently. I see music/songwriting as a means of piercing the armor we shroud ourselves in... or opening the heart, mind and spirit to receive uncomfortable information... In the end, no song I've ever written will be replicated by anyone else... it is a synthesis of mind, heart and body wielding the available tools creatively... Honesty has noting to do with it. Really, Bit... if you're going to be completely honest, you'll have to agree that this could all be an elaborate "phrase" in some simulation...

I purchased it and downloaded it at work since I have a slow connection at home. My first hurdle was transferring it from a thumb drive to my DAW, after the NI installer gave me fits for several reasons, I finally mounted the ISO image virtually and was able to install sucessfully. I love the plug in, I just wish there was a way to change the velocity switch point between major and minor it is fixed at I think 70 or so, and my controllers both are quirky with velocity, if could raise the value higher I could obtain better control, Maybe i will drag out my old Yamaha MEP 4 and remap the velocity, but that means I would have to use midi instead of USB...

Is Greg's amazing Guitarz libraries cheating? Yes, it is. And no, it isn't. I can argue it either way. When I play a "violin" or "guitar" or "saxophone" on a synthesizer/sampler, I am not playing those instruments. However I am truly playing the one instrument I've spent half a century learning: the keyboard. That's my instrument.

I'm in no way a composer or a purist when it comes to string instruments, but if it sounds good straight out of the box......it's good enough for me. I feel the same way with KHS. Action Strings is very useful as it plays nice little rhythmic grooves that I can easily build up from.......inspiration on the fly.....IMO.

I use to be against electronic music and thought all of the above was cheating. I was thinking of some drum software at the time and came across a discussion on this topic. Somebody pointed out that if you weren't a drummer you would hire a session drummer to play for you without batting an eye. I bought EZ Drummer that day. :)
Even though I have some of the best software out there, I still struggle to make good songs. I have changed my perspective of what's cheating and what's not, and now look more at the end result.
That said, Vanilla Ice was cheating when he ripped from Queen. :)

Or piano/keys player (EZKeys), or banjo player (RealiTone Banjo), or every instrument in an orchestra (Action Strings, EMOTOVE), or a tasteful guitar player (BIAB Real tracks, or one of many strum engines out there), or or or I just want to make music. Sometimes with collaborators and sometimes not. Vanilla Ice may well have cheated but what about Milli Vanilli?
