Anybody have the Yamaha PSR300 instrument definition?

Hello All,

MC2 Tech Support suggested I ask if anybody here has already created the instrument definition for the Yamaha PSR300. If not, I'll do it and make it available via the Cakewalk FTP site.

Cheers!

    Hello All,

I know it is kind of silly to reply to your own post, but what the hell.

I found the instrument defs for all the Yamaha keyboards on the Yamaha USA web site.

    http://www.yamaha.com/yamahavgn/CDA/KnowledgeBase/KnowledgeBaseDetail/0,,CNTID%253D10150%2526CTID%253D,00.html

Since there doesn't appear to be a way to insert the Yamaha into the MC2 instrument list, I simply swapped all the General MIDI patch defs with the Yamaha's inside the master.ins file in the MC2 program folder. That's easy, since it's a plain text file.

The downside is that the General MIDI instrument is now the Yamaha PSR300. (Of course I saved the original master.ins file. I'm not an idiot.) I guess I could have left GM alone and burned one of the other instruments instead. Whatever.

    Cheers!

Excellent Dave it makes ISH'S solution from last year a little easier. [Or at least another way to accomplish what Cakewalk didn't think we needed.]

    Importing Instrument Definitions
Can I import new instrument defs into music creator pro?
Since no one has replied who has Pro I would assume that when Cakewalk says Music Creator can't import they mean all versions. [Of Course some techies will try to tell you that it will]

If you search the forum, Ish did find a way to get them into MC - it's a lot of work, but if you need it, I supose it is worth it.

Importing previous Cakewalk instrument definitions – Ish
There is a way, but its a hack. I ran into this problem after taking the time to create an INS file for my QY100. MC DOES NOT provide the means to import it. Why would Cakewalk take this feature away is beyond me.

If you know the details of how to write an INS file you can do the following.

In the cakewalk MC installation directory there is a file called Master.ins This file hold all the instrument definitions for MC. Make a backup copy of this file (just in case). Open this master.ins with Notepad and open your ins file with Notepad. Cut and paste the sections in the correct places. Save the new master.ins file. The next time you startup MC your definitions should be listed.

    You're welcome, Robo.

The hack is really easy, since it's just cut and paste. It will work for any non-GM synth.
I can't emphasize enough that the original master.ins file has to be saved as a backup copy to restore the system when needed.

    Cheers!

Cool. This sounds like what my brother the programmer had me do to get my PSR GX76's definition into MC, but everything else disappeared and I was too chicken to try it. So I restored it to it's regular state. Now I might give it a try, since someone else has done it and it works. Thanks! Greg

    Hi Greg,

I copied my Yamaha's patch list on top of the General MIDI def in the master.ins file. If you want to preserve GM so your PC sound card works right AND your Yamaha hooks up, you might want to overwrite the Roland instrument def instead. Remember to save a copy of the original master.ins.

    Cheers!

Thank you Dave. I have a Korg PA 80 and needed instrument definitions for cakewalk creator 2.0 and I'll try your recommendations.
