Anyone Come Up with a Good Process for Changing DAWs?
Hello-- Finally, I am upgrading my DAW. I'm doing it between projects so I can take my time and enjoy the process (less stress too). I was just wondering if anyone has found a good process or system for transferring their software and CW projects to a new DAW that you would be willing to share? Of course everything will be backed up, but just wondered if I can learn from any of your experiences on a better way to be up and running quickly and prevent any complications? Thanks,

If you're upgrading to Sonar X3 then it will ask you if you want to migrate your old settings to the new version. Just click on "yes". You don't need to uninstall your previous version of Sonar. If you're going to another brand of DAW, then I have no answer for you.

I think razor means a new machine, hardware not software...

My bad. I think of DAW as software, but I guess it can swing both ways.

As you start installing software on the new DAW I'd suggest doing C: drive images periodically. A clean install is almost never problematic but you never know. Could be a time saver.

Make sure you deauthorize any software (which allows it) on the old machine, especially if cannot boot up the old DAW after building the new one (i.e. you're reusing parts like the case, PSU, etc). Although asking to reset authorizations is not usually a problem, its easier to avoid the issue altogether when the software allows you to deauthorize the old machine.

1) Keep the old one as a stand by until you know the new one works. 2) Drivers, drivers, drivers.......... are they available for all your hardware on the new OS ? 3) Personally speaking, all my projects / back ups reside on external drives, so no transfer necessary. 4) When you hit that point where you wish you'd never started, keep going. It will (probably) be worth it eventually. 5) It's ok to swear a lot when trying to re-authorise all them plugins is nowhere like as straightforward as it should be. :)

Yes, I mean the computer will be new. I will definitely make sure everything is up and running before decommissioning the old DAW. Once I see it's all up, can I do the de-authorization then--I mean, can there be an overlap of X2 while I make sure the new DAW is up and running before de-authorizing the old DAW?

You can run Sonar both computers for as long as you like but only use one at a time. So yes there can be an overlap. Rocky

SONAR can be legally installed on two computer simultaneously as long as they are for your use alone.

Awesome. I think if I'm going to have any trouble with overlap, it's going to be with Wavelab. Steinberg uses the eLicenser dongle thing. I guess I don't know if there is going to be any issues, but I'm just really unfamiliar with the whole eLincenser thing.

If you can, pull the harddrive from your old DAW and install it in your new one. You will be able to get all your projects (just point Sonar to the drive and directory).

The e-lincener should be plug and play - ie, it will only let the software run when it is plugged in. Makes it easy to switch machines - install the software and switch usb slots. If you can switch your project hard drive that is good, too. You can re-assign the lettering on your new computer if necessary and simply point your projects to that drive with all the sound files. Don't worry about loading in old versions of SONAR -you can just load in whatever effects you want from that version by doing a custom install. DAW, stereo editor (wavelab or Sound forge), video (Vegas for me), then on to the synths, finally effects. That is how I load in programs. @

The best process for using different DAW's is a filled Master Card.

The one thing I would recommend: If the new system you buy is a commercial system with a pre-installed system, I would advise borrowing somebody's purchased CD and do a re-install to get rid of all the garbage that comes with pre-installs. If you install the same version system (e.g. Windows 7 Professional 64-bit) you can re-use the registration code that comes with your system (generally on a sticker attached to the system, but you can also read it from the <Control Panel>-<System> page). Most people neglect this, but in the long run it is a HUGE advantage. Also, locate all of your plug-ins and loops and copy them over directly to directories on your second non-system disc drive (you ARE planning to have 2 drives??). Then you just have to install the core software and only the new add-ins. the first scan will find everything, including all the things that you bought outside of Cakewalk.

If you use DimPro, SampleTank or any other softsynth that relies on multisamples, there is no need to install the multisamples from scratch onto the new PC. Just copy all the multisamples over with the folder structure intact.

Good info. I have all of my project files on a separate drive and will be moving that to the new rig. The DAW is a custom DAW from ADK so other than their backup software, there shouldn't be any junk on it.
