Anyone Done the Win 8.1 to Win 10 Upgrade?
I have a laptop that is rarely used and I have little investment in what's loaded on it. I understand the free Win 10 is upgrade-only - that is, install in place over 8.1. So, a clean install isn't an option even if that's what I wanted to do - which I do not. The existing OS came with the laptop and I don't have a re-install disk, so there's a just a little bit of discomfort in deciding to make this move. I wanted to see if others have blazed this trail. Looks like it should be low-risk, low-hassle, but I thought I'd ask here first. As to my other machines, my DAW and my every-day home-office computer - they'll both stay at Win 7 until such machine needs to be replaced (or MS drops support of Win 7 ... or hell freezes over ).

I did it on mine and have never been happier. Every machine is different but I did the 10 upgrade on a 7 desktop and an 8.1 laptop and have had no problems to speak of. Support for 7 will end pretty quickly as will support for 8.1. That was my reason for taking the leap in faith. If you're setting it up for audio there are a few tweaks you can do to get latency very, very low. The lowest I have experienced since using Cakewalk products since 1990!

1) You must upgrade first time around to get licensed. But after that you can wipe it and do a clean install. 2) If you clone with something like acronis true image then you've got a win7 backup. You can also roll back in theory anyway without it, but I do hope you have a backup strategy anyway. 3) Hell may freeze over if Sonar stops support for win7. It is already out of mainsteam support so MS may force their hand: http://windows.microsoft...en-gb/windows/lifecycleCheers..

I have a Lenovo Yoga 2 laptop that I use for business purposes, and when an icon appeared telling me I could upgrade to Windows 10 I thought what the hell and went for it. So off it goes into the whole drawn out upgrade process and at the end of it all tells me that it's going to restart to complete the installation. Great! So it restarts and lo & behold....I'm still rocking Windows 8.1. Not even so much as a sorry, it just acted like nothing had happened. And every time I turn it on I get another icon proudly telling me that I can upgrade to Windows 10 if I like. Microsoft is clearly trolling me so I'm just going to ignore it from now on. What do I want to upgrade for anyway? I only use it for Quickbooks and Excel.

Do it! Win10 makes Win8.1 look like the sour fart it is! (sorry, I was never a fan ) Either way, Windows 10 is a true fresh breath of air in the Windows camp. No issues here.

I also jumped from 8.1 to Win 10 and was a seamless process. For a good month, I've been having this intermittent internet connection to no connection at all issue, but on the Windows ten forums, a 16 yr. old guy solved it for me . In case someone else may run into this issue, this was the fix: under "Networking", click the "Configure" button. Go to "Power Management" and uncheck the box that reads "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" Now my internet is running at full speed!! :)) I am also now with the general concensus (Nike) bunch.....JUST DO IT!!!

And vote Trump ;) Number one make sure your drivers and hardware are compatible. Backup first. I'm not upgrading my DAW until 2016, too many teething issues with Win10 (all my other PC's are on it).

Thanks King.....I'm very happy as I was dreading going back to Win 8.1 (which I was very close to doing) and I also didn't want to give up in solving this issue. It was really annoying as I do like to game online as well and this just simply cancelled that option. Just the day to day functions were severely immobilized and it was like being on those 56k modems. Like the good Dok says, make sure all your hardware has good driver support and you should be good to go. Win 10 is much more 'snappier/responsive' and very pleasant to work in.

We only have one 8.1 machine in the house. The Lovely Lady gets real nervous about change. When her XP machine crapped out we bought her computer with 8.1 already installed. She had to upgrade three pieces of business related utilities to the tune of another $100. I for one would be sure that her machine would upgrade without additional cost but she says until there is a compelling reason to do so, I am not allowed to upgrade her computer to Win 10. I have four workstations upgraded to Win 10. I have not done the DAW yet as I want a full weekend to verify that every project I have will (at least) open and play without missing or inoperable plugs. For the DAW I have an exact model drive to be cloned just before I upgrade, That way I'll have three backup measures available to me. 1. Win 10 Rollback-> Win 7 2. Cloned drive 3. Acronis Backup

Unfortunately, my upgrade from Win 7 to Win 10 on my notebook went wrong. First, my Line 6 Guitar Port could not be recognized by any of my recording softwares although Win 10's Groove and Media Player could (yes, Line 6 made available Win 10 drivers for my device); then, an Intel update for display simply made my machine sleep forever... Luckly, I had an Acronis bkp and could restore it back. I think I was almost resolving the problem with the Line 6 drivers and Win 10 when this other problem appeared... Now, I'm gonna wait till next year to decide...

Sidroe Support for 7 will end pretty quickly as will support for 8.1.
That I very seriously doubt. Business users will simply not stand for it. My last employer, a major utility, didn't get around to upgrading to Win 7 (from XP) until Win 8 was already released. The expense for a company-wide upgrade is massive for a fortune 500 operation. I'm confident we'll have Win 7 with us for quite a few years.

Yep, same here when I went from XP to Win 7 on my home-office computer. Really annoying having to shell out money for things like Photoshop Elements. Even more painful to have to buy a working copy of Nero to replace the perfectly adequate one that came free with some DVD drive bought years ago.

Another question. Is anyone successfully running Acronis 2010 on Win 8.1? That's the version I've got and use on my two Win 7 machines. I'm hoping I can use it to capture a disk image of the laptop before trying the OS upgrade. I'm not especially looking to buy the latest version if that could be avoided.
