Anyone Using Sonar with a Portrait Display?

Seems like it might be worth checking out to see full height mixer and ProChannel along with tracks, or see a whole lot of tracks at the same time.

The first 3 books in "The Musician's Guide to Home Recording" series are available from Hal Leonard and http://www.reverb.com. Listen to my music on http://www.YouTube.com/thecraiganderton, and visit http://www.craiganderton.com. Thanks!

    Hi Craig...

No, not portrait mode per se... But now with a 30" Apple Cinema HD display set at 2540x1600 (2640? Excuse me not remembering the exact figure), I find that I can see the mixer at full height and display something like 20 tracks in TV above it at minimum height (tracks) simultaneously...

This has made a big change in my work flow as I can now have a practical view of these on a single monitor...

When viewing TV by itself, I can see 24 tracks with all basic controls (not sends) in a single view... Outstanding! I highly recommend this to others. I can't begin to say how much this large, high res screen has changed things for me!

No, my touch screen is adjustable for angle, but it doesn't rotate.

StudioCat > I use Windows 10 and Sonar Platinum. I have a touch screen.
I make some videos. This one shows how to do a physical loopback on the RME UCX to get many more equalizer nodes.

    Just a thought...

I remember that windows itself can rotate the image... There's an option for it... So it might rotate your screen for you?

One feature of StudioOne that I covet is being able to rotate the PRV, so the piano note key names are aligned properly like a keyboard would be in front of you. Makes figuring out parts SO much easier. (I suppose this is somewhat O/T but since we're talking about rotation) :-)

Every monitor I've tried rotating into portrait mode made the text look like crap, so I never kept them that way.
    Sub-pixel aliasing problems? Could be.
Or it could be my monitors were too cheap :-)

My touch screen was adjustable for angle. The brace was attached to the monitor with a four screw square so I unscrewed it, turned it 90 degrees and reattached it.

The reason I did this was as Craig said, use mixer view. But in my case for Propellerheads Reason where the mixer isn't totally visible in landscape. It worked great but eventually I dropped reason and now use my touchscreen on my piano, to drive samplers and read sheet music.

I always meant to try it, for seeing lots of tracks, but never got around to it.

I hear CA and I have just learned to use FOLDERs and expand or contract as needed.  Yes, I can't see a lot at the same time but this allows me to have a very wide CONSOLE view in order to see a lot of tracks in the mixer metaphor.  Thank goodness for the channel coloring ability, this has made finding tracks in console view somewhat easier. I don't use PRO CHANNEL at all so the limit in height isn't an issue except the fact that the number of sends is limited and I can't stand having to arrow up and down to mix with the sends.

I prefer the CONSOLE view to the track view for mixing anyway.  If anything, I have been contemplating getting one of those ultra wide monitors for CONSOLE view only usage.

You did give me a thought though, how about having a FOLDER type view in CONSOLE mode wherein the tracks that are contained in your FOLDERs are collapsed in CONSOLE view as well with the ability to expand or contract folders in CONSOLE view as well.  This state of FOLDERS would persist between views (with my track record, this feature probably already exists and I just don't know about it).  :-)

BFD3 does something like this in their built in MINI MIXER and I find very productive given the small size of the VSTi window in SONAR.

I still want to see six 30" cinema screens in a 2x3 grid (two rows of three monitors each), which would encompass the entire DAW. If touch-screen, just move the console around. Just like moving your chair in an old analog console studio.

Here's thought for rotating the PRV:
If you have a second monitor, drag the PRV into it and then set the rotation to portrait. You'd get the rotated PRV but couldn't really use the monitor for much else.

    Just at thought.

+1, I have an older monitor which has a handy swivel in the mount, and tried the portrait display for kicks using Word, but that did not last very long. The reason is that I am an alt-tab fiend, and also like windows to be poking out from under each other (the main SONAR program is one of the few programs I run maximized, and on the main monitor). For speed of navigation, windows I will shift/resize I float and refocus as needed. As many programs/plugs are scripted to be landscape, a portrait display makes them more difficult to do this with (plus I am too lazy to rotate the monitor back and forth).
